Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Forging A Research Career Across Two Continents
Q: What barriers have you faced and how have you overcome them?
Time and alignment with institutional priorities were key barriers. We addressed them by tying projects to management goals, securing some funding, and sometimes pursuing preliminary, data-backed efforts with residents and students to build momentum before scaling up.
Forging A Research Career Across Two Continents
Q: What are the main pillars of your UNC Ethiopia Alliance and what have you achieved so far?
We established three pillars: improving evidence-based care through a national pediatric cancer registry, advancing quality improvement strategies, and enabling research capacity through education and mentorship. The registry now spans nine hospitals, and we've published findings on quality metrics and treatment outcomes.
Forging A Research Career Across Two Continents
Q: Could you tell us about your research work in Ethiopia and how it ties to your personal story and career journey?
My work in Ethiopia grew from personal experiences with cancer care disparities and access, which motivated me to collaborate internationally. We built long-term partnerships, started with education and rotation programs, and later expanded into a formal research agenda centered on improving evidence-based care and developing the pediatric cancer registry across multiple hospitals.
Putting The Pitt in Pittsburgh: Life as a Medical Advisor and Advocate
Q: How involved were you in pre-production versus on-set?
In pre-production I contributed heavily to storyline development and research, while on-set I collaborated with actors and writers to keep scenes medically plausible, especially for pediatrics.
Putting The Pitt in Pittsburgh: Life as a Medical Advisor and Advocate
Q: What does the medical advisor do on The Pitt?
The medical advisor shapes storylines, ensures medical accuracy, and provides input on patient experiences and health disparities to ground the show in realism.
