  • The best pregnancy podcast

I listened to so many episodes all through my pregnancy. At the end of my pregnancy, I had hypertension and was induced. Because of this podcast, I had a general idea of what was happening to me and when things were suggested (foley balloon, etc) I had an idea of what was happening and everything wasn’t a shock. It really gave me a baseline to build of knowledge to build upon! Dr Fox is so knowledgeable and provides evidence based information!

  • Great for expectant fathers too!

This is a super useful podcast—and not just for ob/gyn patients! I find it extraordinarily helpful to support my wife, understand what she’s going through, and help plan intelligent questions for doctor visits. The style and level of detail are also great—makes me question whether I should’ve become an OB rather than a lawyer! Keep the great episodes coming!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

“How our Kids Learn, Part B: The controversy over learning disabilities and extended time” – with Dr. Marla Baum PsyD
Q: How has the IDEA Act influenced testing and accommodations in schools?
It created a framework where schools are responsible for identifying and supporting students with disabilities, increasing referrals for testing, and triggering accommodations like extended time when they are warranted by documented needs.
“How our Kids Learn, Part B: The controversy over learning disabilities and extended time” – with Dr. Marla Baum PsyD
Q: What are the main factors determining whether a child should receive extended time on tests?
Consider the specific learning disability and whether extra time significantly improves performance. If the child's score improves with extended time and it aligns with their needs, it may be appropriate; otherwise, other interventions should be explored.
“How our Kids Learn, Part B: The controversy over learning disabilities and extended time” – with Dr. Marla Baum PsyD
Q: How would a parent know if they should pursue neuropsychological testing for their child?
If there are signs such as peaks and valleys in achievement, distress related to school, or concerns parents can't articulate, it's reasonable to have a conversation with a school psychologist or pediatrician to explore whether testing is warranted.
"Mailbag 29: What does the Fox say" - With Dr. Nathan Fox
Q: Is it always necessary to go to the doctor or hospital if you bleed in your first trimester?
First trimester bleeding is not always an emergency and not all bleeding requires immediate ER evaluation, especially if it's known the pregnancy is intrauterine; decisions depend on bleeding severity, prior knowledge of the pregnancy, and risk factors.
"Mailbag 29: What does the Fox say" - With Dr. Nathan Fox
Q: One, alcohol. I can see myself enjoying a glass of wine every once in a while, maybe in my second or third trimester. Are studies on moderate alcohol use in pregnancy available to read, and where are they published?
There are studies on moderate or low use of alcohol in pregnancy with varying definitions, and the best data suggest that a single glass now and then is not clearly dangerous, but the overall guideline remains abstinence because there is no proven benefit and uncertainty about low levels.
