  • This podcast is nice, but…

Please stop using terms like “pregnant person”. This is so distracting every single time, makes listening to the podcast a chore, where I am being forced imaginary pictures of “chestfeeders”. Unfortunately for me, the content itself is pretty good.

  • 5 minutes in before trash talking capitalism

I am dying for one mothers podcast that doesn’t have an implicit socialist bend. My mother escaped from communism and we had family members killed by it. Not all of your listeners are anti-capitalist, in fact a silent majority of people are NOT socialist. Please, save the anti-capitalism jabs for a different, more political format! I want to hear about science based parenting, not your inexperienced, naive take on socialism and politics.

  • Amazing birth resource

This is an excellent podcast for learning what research and evidence is on birth topics. I am a birth doula and I refer to their website and podcast often to brush up on different topics and share many of their resources with my clients.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EBB 401 - Perinatal Mental Health for 2SLGBTQ+ Parents with Dr. Leiszle Lapping-Carr, Clinical Psychologist
Q: What practical steps can healthcare providers take to be more affirming and supportive?
Create welcoming spaces (pronouns, inclusive forms), use name and pronouns correctly, visibly affirming signals (pride flags), train front-desk staff, avoid assuming heterosexuality or cisgender norms, and tailor care to address both mental health and gender identity concerns respectfully.
EBB 401 - Perinatal Mental Health for 2SLGBTQ+ Parents with Dr. Leiszle Lapping-Carr, Clinical Psychologist
Q: What factors might elevate risk for perinatal mental health issues in these groups?
Stigma and discrimination drive minority stress, with laws and policies contributing to ongoing stress; social safety concerns and lack of perceived safety also play roles; typical risk factors like prior mental health history, substance use, abuse, and estrangement from family are present at higher rates in LGBTQ populations.
EBB 401 - Perinatal Mental Health for 2SLGBTQ+ Parents with Dr. Leiszle Lapping-Carr, Clinical Psychologist
Q: Can you share what you found about perinatal depression rates in queer and trans parents compared to cisgender heterosexual women?
Rates in cisgender heterosexual women are around 20%. In the 2LGBTQ+ population, data show higher risks, with cisgender queer women around 30% and up to about 35% in some subgroups; for trans and gender diverse folks, research is more limited but suggests much higher distress, including a small study showing over 80% with depression scores on PHQ-9.
EBB 391 - Electronic Fetal Monitoring Advocacy Tips with Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, OB/GYN and Author of The Birth Book
Q: In what situations is continuous monitoring particularly recommended, and how should patients approach these conversations with their care team?
Continuous monitoring is most justifiable in higher-risk scenarios (e.g., placental issues, prior stillbirth, severe preeclampsia, or labor induction with contraction management). Patients should discuss goals, request a shared decision-making conversation before labor, and document their preferences while expressing willingness to reassess if the situation changes.
EBB 391 - Electronic Fetal Monitoring Advocacy Tips with Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, OB/GYN and Author of The Birth Book
Q: What do you wish more parents understood about electronic fetal monitoring before they go into labor?
Parents should understand the basics of what the monitor shows (baby heart rate and contractions), that the test is not perfect, and that there are meaningful choices such as intermittent monitoring versus continuous monitoring; they should also know how to ask for an explanation of what is being observed and what the plan is if concerns arise.
