  • Great Podcast

This podcast has everything a Herd Check specialist wants and needs. Dr. Fred is diving deep and this is essential listening for those in the industry. The "Call me on the phone line, I'll put my arm up in your bovine" line in the song intro is hilarious and very clever. Great job AABP and Dr. Fred Gingrich.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Epi. 290 – Disbudding Dairy Calves – How does the Method Influence Pain and Wound Healing
Q: What are the research gaps we have for best practice for disbudding calves? What's on your list for the next steps?
Key gaps include developing longer-lasting and more reliable blocks, understanding potential negative effects of repeated NSAID dosing on digestion, and refining paste usage to minimize non-target tissue effects while maintaining effective pain relief.
Epi. 290 – Disbudding Dairy Calves – How does the Method Influence Pain and Wound Healing
Q: I'd like for you to talk a little bit about the trial that your team did, what were the treatment groups you evaluated when looking at wounds?
The trial compared hot iron disbudding with various paste applications (different paste volumes, shaved vs unshaved buds) and included an untreated control to assess healing rates, wound size, and sensitivity over time.
Epi. 290 – Disbudding Dairy Calves – How does the Method Influence Pain and Wound Healing
Q: Can you dive into the data for paste versus cautery and what variables have the biggest impact on outcomes like healing and regrowth?
Cautery tends to yield faster wound healing and lower regrowth rates, while paste can cause longer healing times and more regrowth; however, paste offers certain practical advantages and requires proper pain relief to be comparable in welfare outcomes.
Epi. 290 – Disbudding Dairy Calves – How does the Method Influence Pain and Wound Healing
Q: So talk a little bit about, in your experience, Cassandra, what have we improved on compared to 20, 30 years ago when we're specifically talking about disbudding and dehorning or just pain management in general?
There has been a shift toward standardized pain management, earlier procedure timing, and better guidance from the professional body, with recommendations for both a local block and NSAID use as best practice, indicating a clear move toward higher welfare standards.
Epi. 287 – The Veterinarian’s Role in Special Needs Pens for Feedlots
Q: What are the options for animals in the chronic pen if recovery seems unlikely?
Options include returning to the home pen if possible, transitioning to a rail pen, or humane euthanasia if welfare is compromised.
