  • Great Podcast

This podcast has everything a Herd Check specialist wants and needs. Dr. Fred is diving deep and this is essential listening for those in the industry. The "Call me on the phone line, I'll put my arm up in your bovine" line in the song intro is hilarious and very clever. Great job AABP and Dr. Fred Gingrich.

Epi. 287 – The Veterinarian’s Role in Special Needs Pens for Feedlots
Q: What are the options for animals in the chronic pen if recovery seems unlikely?
Options include returning to the home pen if possible, transitioning to a rail pen, or humane euthanasia if welfare is compromised.
Epi. 287 – The Veterinarian’s Role in Special Needs Pens for Feedlots
Q: How do you decide when an animal in treatment leaves the treatment pen and goes home?
After completing the prescribed days of therapy and meeting recovery criteria per the software protocol, the animal is evaluated to return to the home pen if recovering.
Epi. 287 – The Veterinarian’s Role in Special Needs Pens for Feedlots
Q: If you want to see the slides associated with that presentation, where can listeners find them?
The slides are available on the online CE portal for members, with recent grad presentations uploaded for access.
Epi. 283 – Parasite Resistance and Sustainable Parasite Management – Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim
Q: How can diagnostics move private practitioners away from assumptions toward operation-specific parasite management, and what should clinicians expect from fecal egg counts and reductions?
Diagnostics reveal actual parasite burdens and trends, enabling tailored treatment plans; fecal egg counts alone aren't a universal trigger for treatment, but sustained monitoring (including fecal egg count reduction tests) helps calibrate strategies over time.
Epi. 283 – Parasite Resistance and Sustainable Parasite Management – Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim
Q: Where does combination treatment fit into a sustainable parasite management strategy, and what should veterinarians keep in mind to use it responsibly?
Combination therapy can greatly boost efficacy when single products struggle, but it must be used within a refugia framework to prevent rapid multi-drug resistance, and it should be integrated with a holistic herd health and pasture management plan.
