  • Episode 108: At work in the ruins.

Has to be the most thought provoking, challenging, reinforcing, heartening, illuminating podcast interview I’ve listened to in a long while. Such clear sighted map making and navigation along the multiple paths and ways we need to think about and negotiate to bring people and food back together if we are to make the best of life in a collapsing human world. Thank you both, Duvall and ffinlo, for re-energising this 70- something rural refugee of 50yrs seeking ways to rebuild and rejuvenate the ‘m... more

  • Insightful, Inspiring, Educational

Just listened to the episode on Regenerative Agriculture and wish the entire podcast could be about this - so inspiring, thoughtful, and encouraging. Clearly looked at the issues and offered real world solutions.

Also fairly impressed that they were able to talk to the ‘Conservative Environmental Network’ without falling about laughing (or weeping) at the irony. But the interviewer kept their cool and it was useful to hear how the ruling class justifies itself to itself.

Q: What's the common thread between soil health and human health in your work?
Montgomery argues that soil health directly influences the nutrients in our food and the overall health of people, so farming practices that protect and enrich soil will, in turn, improve public health.
'Soil fertility is a defence issue'
Q: What is Britain's role in exporting soil- and security-related innovations?
Britain can share ideas and technologies that improve soil health, regenerative farming, and ecological security with other countries, fostering global resilience while supporting national interests.
'Soil fertility is a defence issue'
Q: What about climate extremes and the Arctic?
Climatic extremes alter operational envelopes; understanding soil and ecological responses helps adapt equipment, bases, and strategies to remain effective in future high-stress environments.
'Soil fertility is a defence issue'
Q: How does the MOD's land management illustrate soil's role in security?
MOD land supports training while also offering ecological benefits; managing soil health helps ensure reliable training environments and reduces long-term vulnerabilities tied to degraded land.
'Soil fertility is a defence issue'
Q: Why do you see soil as a defence issue?
Soil underpins essential functions like water filtration, food production, and ecosystem services; the military also relies on land for training, mobility, and maintaining readiness, so soil health translates directly into national resilience.
