  • Episode 108: At work in the ruins.

Has to be the most thought provoking, challenging, reinforcing, heartening, illuminating podcast interview I’ve listened to in a long while. Such clear sighted map making and navigation along the multiple paths and ways we need to think about and negotiate to bring people and food back together if we are to make the best of life in a collapsing human world. Thank you both, Duvall and ffinlo, for re-energising this 70- something rural refugee of 50yrs seeking ways to rebuild and rejuvenate the ‘m... more

  • Insightful, Inspiring, Educational

Just listened to the episode on Regenerative Agriculture and wish the entire podcast could be about this - so inspiring, thoughtful, and encouraging. Clearly looked at the issues and offered real world solutions.

Also fairly impressed that they were able to talk to the ‘Conservative Environmental Network’ without falling about laughing (or weeping) at the irony. But the interviewer kept their cool and it was useful to hear how the ruling class justifies itself to itself.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nature means business
Q: What role does policy play in supporting regenerative farming and investments?
Policy needs to connect farming with climate and nature goals, fund landscape-scale investments, and move away from the subsidy language toward payments for ecosystem services that support resilience and food security.
Nature means business
Q: How is the weather impacting yields and harvest timing?
Weather has caused stress and yield penalties due to dryness and early harvests; forecasts suggest harvesting may occur earlier than usual, with winter cereals potentially ready by July if conditions stay favorable.
Nature means business
Q: What does June bring for farming and how is moisture affecting plans?
Moisture from recent rain helps germinate seeds and establish wild birdseed mixtures, but farmers must time planting to avoid seeding too early or too late, balancing weed germination with crop establishment for wildlife habitat.
'What's good for the land, is good for us'
Q: What's the common thread between soil health and human health in your work?
Montgomery argues that soil health directly influences the nutrients in our food and the overall health of people, so farming practices that protect and enrich soil will, in turn, improve public health.
'Soil fertility is a defence issue'
Q: What is Britain's role in exporting soil- and security-related innovations?
Britain can share ideas and technologies that improve soil health, regenerative farming, and ecological security with other countries, fostering global resilience while supporting national interests.
