  • Very helpful

This is a very helpful podcast and I look forward to new episodes. I am hoping there will be an episode devoted to how caregivers can cope with a spouse who also has anosognosia, which prevents the spouse with Alzheimer’s dementia from recognizing and understanding his or her cognitive impairment. This very challenging condition makes caregiving even more difficult for caregivers and while there’s a lot of available information on what anosognosia is, I have yet to hear any information about how... more

  • Good information

I am grateful for the great information in the podcast. One of the hosts sounds to me like a kindergarten teacher, which seems out of place for the topic, but the information which is detailed and very helpful.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Brain’s Plastic Problem (with Dr. Matt Campen & Dr. Eliane El Hayek)
Q: Is there evidence of causality between microplastics and dementia?
Current data lean toward the disease creating a more permissive brain environment for plastics, though there are hints that plastics could accelerate pathological processes in some contexts.
The Brain’s Plastic Problem (with Dr. Matt Campen & Dr. Eliane El Hayek)
Q: What do we know about how plastics get into the brain?
Particles are nano-sized, potentially enter via lipid transport pathways, may accumulate in areas of inflammation, and can cross a compromised blood-brain barrier, especially in dementia.
The Brain’s Plastic Problem (with Dr. Matt Campen & Dr. Eliane El Hayek)
Q: Matt, how did you begin exploring microplastics in the brain?
We started by quantifying plastics in cadaver samples, then comparing dementia brains to non-dementia brains to see if there was a difference in concentration and distribution.
From Interviewing World Leaders to Leading Caregivers (with Deborah Kan)
Q: Deborah, through your experience with your mom and the evolution of Being Patient, how has your vision of life with dementia evolved over the past 10 years?
I've seen dementia evolve from a stigmatized, doom-filled narrative to a narrative of agency and possibility, where people with dementia can lead meaningful, engaged lives. Early diagnostics, learning guides, and stories from patients and caregivers have shown that knowledge and connection change outcomes, and that therapy and research are advancing in ways that allow for ongoing contribution and quality of life.
Dementia Without Borders (with Dr. Santino Severoni)
Q: Tell us about your journey and what inspired your focus on dementia among refugee and migrant communities.
Dr. Severoni explains that health and migration have long been under-studied in public health, that the migration experience is a complex determinant of health, and that long-term care access for migrants and refugees with dementia has been consistently limited by legal, linguistic, and systemic barriers, which motivated WHO to push for better data, policy, and inclusive services.
