  • Blown away by Tinnitus Episode

I don’t know where to begin except to say I had a similar experience with an overactive nervous system that made me itchy along with Tinnitus. You summed it up by sharing the simple words Abandon Hope. I understood completely what you meant and have also found piece in my discomfort. Like you it has lessened greatly but not by fighting or fearing it. Instead acceptance. Thankyou for your calming voice and Metta meditation. Just amazing and transformative.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Arthur Brooks: Meaning in Midlife & Beyond
Q: What practical steps can listeners take tomorrow to invite meaning?
Avoid first-hour phone use, take a sunrise walk, eat without devices, and place your phone away at night to allow your brain to engage in the default mode network and open space for bigger questions.
Arthur Brooks: Meaning in Midlife & Beyond
Q: Why do people experience a crash in meaning after achieving big goals?
Because joy comes from progress and serving a purpose, not from final arrival; the arrival fallacy leads people to expect permanent ebullience, which reality does not provide, so meaning comes from ongoing growth and contribution rather than closure.
Arthur Brooks: Meaning in Midlife & Beyond
Q: Take me into meaning in life and how it differs from happiness or achievement
Meaning is not a fleeting feeling; it's structured around coherence (why things happen), purpose (why I do what I do), and significance (why my life matters to others), and it requires engaging both hemispheres of the brain and living through actions that serve something larger than myself.
An End to Chronic Pain? Surprising Science is Getting Us Closer. | Dr. Rachel Zoffness
Q: What practical steps can someone take to move from high pain to low pain using the biopsychosocial model?
Identify and adjust the 'high pain' ingredients (like prolonged sitting and isolation) and replace them with 'low pain' strategies (regular movement, sleep hygiene, social connection, and pacing activities to gradually reintroduce life).
An End to Chronic Pain? Surprising Science is Getting Us Closer. | Dr. Rachel Zoffness
Q: How do thoughts and expectations influence pain, and can you share a practical example?
Thoughts and expectations can change physiology and pain perception; a vivid example is biofeedback showing real-time shifts in muscle tension and temperature when a person guides their thoughts and breathing, illustrating how cognition can alter pain levels.
