In this podcast, journalist Carol Costello revisits the first big assignment she covered as a 22-year-old, novice reporter: Phyllis Cottles’ brutal attack. Psychologists call them “Triumphant Survivors,” but Phyllis Cottle was more than a survivor, she used this crime to better herself and the world around her.

A remarkable woman and a remarkable true story. Very well told by Carol Costello. Must have been amazing to cover such a story as a novice reporter! Excellent job
The story was heroic and tragic. Glad it was brought to light
I’m from Akron and remember this crime well. Ms. Costello did a nice job. I would like more access to the actual police, investigative, and prosecutorial reports/records and research used to produce this podcast. (your web link posts more about Ms. Costello than the crime.) Whatever happened to Ms. Cottle’s mother??
This story goes deep. It is well told and organized. There is a slight nod of racism, but unintentional, I believe.
The survivor is strong. She makes this story so remarkable, What a beautiful human being. So much to learn from Phyllis, about life, death, and taking everything in between in stride and with grace.
The ads were a bit much, but just skip through them. Also, the episodes are micro episodes at 20 min each but all episodes are available now so that wasn’t an issue for me.
This woman went through so much trauma and made it out alive! Everyone needs to hear her story.
