Wanted to like it but full of padding through repetition and self-reflection. A good part of the season’s content is Payne asking himself rhetorical questions in the mistaken belief a process side-story has a part in the series. A great hate-listen is the soul-destroying episode comprised of Payne and team self-congratulating themselves on achieving a sit-down interview. Anchorman territory.
Firstly, thank you for bringing us the stories of MMIWG and their families.
I appreciate a podcast that must cost a lot to produce is being released for free. Unfortunately, sometimes is feels like it’s padded to time, and Payne and colleagues are saying the same things over and over to run out the clock.
I’ve always appreciated Payne’s podcasting style and stories, however ‘In the midnight sun’ had me confused between the story lines, updates and bonus episodes. I found it complicated to keep up and still unsure what the conclusion is OR if there even is one. Less theatrics and more straightforward journalism, pls.
Entertaining and interesting, yes. But what makes an interesting story also makes one question their ethics and journalistic integrity. Beyond that, this is like listening to an airport business book: basically repeating the same thing every episode with like six minutes of new content, ultimately with no conclusion whatsoever.
Payne we need more normal content and an update on Alaska.

The content revolves around captivating true crime investigations, focusing particularly on mysterious disappearances, often delving into the emotional and societal impacts of these cases. Each season tackles different cold cases, from Tara Grinstead, a schoolteacher whose vanishing led to significant arrests, to Kristal Reisinger, a young mother whose disappearance from a secluded Colorado setting remains unsolved. Noteworthy are the troubling narratives surrounding missing Indigenous women, brought to light in seasons covering the cases of Ashley Loring HeavyRunner and Florence Okpealuk, emphasizing the systemic failures in addressing these issues. The podcast is likely to appeal to audiences interested in deep, investigative storytelling... more
