  • Stick to wine!

Just listened to the 12/23/2020 Wines of the Year podcast. As usual, the awards went to outstanding wines.

I just wish you hadn’t closed with unnecessary political commentary.

While many people are glad to see the change, not everyone is gleeful about the prospects for the next four years.

  • Glad I found another wine podcast

I'm always looking for interesting wine podcasts that have regular update schedules. I enjoy the hosts' banter and enthusiasm. The guests are more Napa focused and hope they can invite more winemakers or professionals from Sonoma and the North Coast. I also like that they take show notes seriously and provide good descriptions and links discussed during the show.

I'm a longtime listener to this radio show and I'm really glad that it's a podcast too now. If you like great wine or are just curious, this pod is for you. Just listening to the people on this show is an education. People spend a lifetime accumulating this knowledge and making wine and they come on this show and just tell all about it. I love listening to winemakers explain what they do, how and why they make the choices they do.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kim Stare Wallace, Dry Creek Vineyard
Q: What makes the Mariner Bordeaux blend special and how does it vary by vintage?
It's a 100% Dry Creek Valley Bordeaux blend whose proportions shift by vintage to reflect fruit availability and balance, with Tim Bell's winemaking guidance.
Kim Stare Wallace, Dry Creek Vineyard
Q: Is it a Gewürztraminer?
No, it's Dry Chenin Blanc, a long-running focus for Dry Creek Vineyard, made in a dry style.
Scott Lindstrom-Dake, Thumbprint Cellars
Q: Why blend Merlot with Malbec and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon in the threesome blend?
The blend leverages Merlot's lush, approachable mid-palate with Malbec's meaty character and a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and finish, achieving a balanced, age-worthy Meritage-style wine.
Scott Lindstrom-Dake, Thumbprint Cellars
Q: First off, what is carbonic maceration and how does it influence the wine's character?
Carbonic maceration involves placing whole grape clusters in a tank so each berry ferments on its own, creating aromas and a lighter structure with varying acidity, which later blends into a more complex mouthfeel and aromatic profile when aged.
Tony Lombardi from Lombardi Wines
Q: Yeah, so Tony, tell us where this wine comes from, because there is two of them.
The Pinot Noir is sourced from multiple blocks including Bear Vineyard and Gaps Crown in the Petaluma Gap, with careful separation of lots to maintain distinct characters before blending into a Sonoma Coast designation; the Chardonnay is from the Martella Vineyard in the Russian River Valley, crafted to be a balanced white Burgundy-inspired style with careful oak integration.
