  • Not enough autistic voices

If you’re actually interested in autism advocacy, include autistic voices. There are plenty of autistic people who could speak about their own experiences and provide more insight.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Anthony Ianni: The First Division I Basketball Player Diagnosed with Autism
Q: Can you explain that time a little bit?
I had an idea that I had a learning disability. I just didn't know what it was until my parents told me about my autism diagnosis in high school, which explained several things about my behavior.
Fashion That Fits Every Body: Hilary Pham on Adaptive Clothing Innovation
Q: How did you get into creating Equability?
It was inspired by seeing my mom struggle with traditional clothing due to arthritis and carpal tunnel.
Understanding the Autistic and ADHD Nervous System
Q: Can you explain the difference between hyperarousal and hypoarousal?
Hyperarousal is the state of being mobilized for action, and hypoarousal is a dissociated state where one feels foggy or disconnected. Both states reflect the body’s response to stress.
Understanding the Autistic and ADHD Nervous System
Q: What do we do in those moments of stress and is it different for autistic individuals than individuals with ADHD?
Both groups can benefit from understanding their nervous systems and tracking their states, but the specific strategies may vary. Breath work is commonly taught, but it’s essential to recognize it doesn’t work for everyone and might be more effective in a supportive context.
From Struggle to Strength: A Father’s Journey with Autism
Q: Why do you think it is that the fathers have, that you've seen have a resistance to a diagnosis?
Harry attributes the resistance to two types of fathers: those with ego and machismo, who find it hard to accept a diagnosis, and those who struggle to know how to help their child, leading to a stoicism that can seem like detachment.
