  • Naysayers

Invite skeptics to interrogate your work in order to find the truth. Don’t call them names. It makes your viewpoint look weak. When you argue against their points without them present, make sure you accurately present their cases—all of them. Don’t cherry-pick.

  • Disappointed

I love the idea of this podcast and the hosts, but am very disappointed in the inclusion of proponents of facilitated communication and spelling to communicate! There’s so much misinformation around this topic, so adding legitimacy to it via this podcast is really harmful. If you or someone you know is considering using facilitated communication, please talk to your local (licensed!) SLP instead of trusting people who say your child can’t independently communicate.

The Application and Misapplication of Evidence-based Practice: Part 1 of 3 Episodes on Non-Speakers and Gestalt Language Processing
Q: Why is it important to address the issue of evidence-based practice from lived experience and clinical practice?
Lived experience and family perspectives provide essential context and can reveal gaps where traditional research alone misses the real-world impact, especially for marginalized communication modalities.
A Brazilian Autistic Policeman and Neurodiversity Advocate, with Saulo Barbosa

People try to change autistic individuals instead of allowing them to be who they want to be.
Grow or fold: The Journey of a Dad and His Autistic Son with High Support Needs . With Matt Ross
Q: Matt, if you would just share some aspects of your journey, of your personal and professional journey, and how that led to your current work?

Understanding Highly Sensitive People (or Empaths), with Dr. Judith Orloff
Q: Is it essential to get a clinical diagnosis for sensitivity or empathy?
It's important to assess the individual needs; if accessing services or support, a diagnosis may help, but the understanding should be that empaths may be misdiagnosed.
