  • Voice to the Voiceless

Thank you, Barry Prizant, for your series on the nonspeaking autistic community. I have two teens/young adults, one 16 and one 20, who are nonspeaking and minimally/unreliably speaking, respectively. They use S2C and spelling-based communication, and they have undergone the full battery of neuropsych/educational testing that fully demonstrates not only their cognitive levels but their exceptional brilliance with genius-level IQs. Showing a real understanding of calculus without ever having sat f... more

  • Naysayers

Invite skeptics to interrogate your work in order to find the truth. Don’t call them names. It makes your viewpoint look weak. When you argue against their points without them present, make sure you accurately present their cases—all of them. Don’t cherry-pick.

  • Disappointed

I love the idea of this podcast and the hosts, but am very disappointed in the inclusion of proponents of facilitated communication and spelling to communicate! There’s so much misinformation around this topic, so adding legitimacy to it via this podcast is really harmful. If you or someone you know is considering using facilitated communication, please talk to your local (licensed!) SLP instead of trusting people who say your child can’t independently communicate.

The Application and Misapplication of Evidence-based Practice: Part 1 of 3 Episodes on Non-Speakers and Gestalt Language Processing
Q: How should professionals balance research evidence with clinical expertise and family values?
By treating all three pillars as equal and using collaboration with families to inform goals and decisions, ensuring practices are meaningful, accessible, and respectful of individual differences.

Q: What do you think the greatest misunderstanding is about autistic people that you try to change?
People try to change autistic individuals instead of allowing them to be who they want to be.
