  • My favorite of all the marketing podcasts.

This is the only one I actually wait for and listen to as soon as it comes out. I will admit I miss the longer format (it was great for when I was making dinner!) but I’d rather have shorter episodes than none at all. The information is always up to date, presented in a way that both informs and entertains, and seems well-researched and thought-out. In addition to being an author myself I work in the self-publishing industry and recommend this show regularly to our author clients.

Been listening since the Jim days. I’m glad Jim is gone. I’m glad Clair is gone. I hope Brian will have the confidence to stay solo. He’s really all we need.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 635 - Pen Names and Part-Time Writing
Q: What is a permission self-published authors should give themselves to improve joy and results?
Authors should grant themselves permission to ignore FOMO, focus on strategies that yield results, and cut low-impact tasks from their to-do lists to avoid burnout and improve outcomes.
Episode 635 - Pen Names and Part-Time Writing
Q: How do changes in buying habits and Amazon's algorithms affect pen names and branding?
Amazon's ranking and discovery changes require careful consideration of how pen names and branding are structured so that readers can find the right book in the right genre without cross-contamination of audiences.
Episode 635 - Pen Names and Part-Time Writing
Q: Is it worth relaunching a book or should you write a completely new one?
Relauch can help if it fits your time and energy, but in many cases starting a completely new book or a new series starter yields greater benefits, especially when aiming to grow a brand across multiple titles.
Episode 635 - Pen Names and Part-Time Writing
Q: When should you consider using a pen name vs. sticking to one name for all work?
The guidance is to consider a pen name when you're producing work in a substantially different genre, to avoid confusing readers or Amazon's recommendations, while also ensuring the name fits the target audience and that social handles and domains are available.
Episode 625 - Bryan Answers Your Questions
Q: Do hashtags make a difference anymore, and what should authors focus on?
Hashtags have limited value now; prioritize a strong, clear hook at the beginning of content and tailor promotional strategies to each platform, using hashtag trends as a supplementary cue rather than the main driver.
