  • Not a great first encounter with this podcast

I listened to my first episode of this podcast today and the host had the same word for word answer to everything the guest was saying, which was “I love that ,that’s fantastic”. It was incredibly repetitive and really diminished the value of this guest in my opinion. It comes across as unprepared and inattentive and doesn’t make me want to listen to more of this podcast at all. It’s a shame because I think she has a lot to say about writing and structuring series, but that information was burie... more

How to Build Your Author Business with Support
Q: From the audience: what is the one system in an author's business that consistently generates income even when not actively promoted, and how is it built?
The backlist and a strong newsletter system are critical. Automatic newsletter sequences that guide readers from initial purchase to related books help maintain income. Regularly updating and testing these sequences keeps them effective, and they serve as a reliable source of ongoing revenue even during quiet periods.
How to Build Your Author Business with Support
Q: What advice would you give new authors about the early tasks they should hand off to a coach or manager?
Early on, focus on tasks that are bogging you down and prevent you from writing. This includes shipping, basic operations like bookkeeping, and creating structured processes such as SOPs. A system like ClickUp with templates for launches or newsletters can help establish repeatable workflows so you can offload tasks without losing control of your business.
How to Build Your Author Business with Support
Q: How do you determine whether a new author needs a full-time business manager or more limited, task-based support?
I start by identifying the author's weakest areas and their goals. Some may need help with organizing operations or launching a book, while others require ongoing management of a large business. The decision depends on the complexity of their needs, their budget, and whether they want to offload core processes to free time for writing. I often begin with essential resources and then scale up to more involved support as the business grows.
How to Build Your Author Business with Support
Q: What is the main difference between serving as an author business manager and acting as a personal assistant?
The key difference is accountability and strategic oversight. A business manager handles the overall business operations, coordinates with retailers, editors, and designers, and creates systems that enable growth. An assistant typically focuses on executing tasks as directed. By adopting the business manager role, I'm able to guide clients with strategic decisions and build scalable processes rather than just completing daily tasks.
How to Build Your Author Business with Support
Q: What initially motivated you to move from an assistant role to a formal author business manager, and how has that perspective shaped your work?
Over time, the perception of the assistant role shifted as my responsibilities grew. I began taking on tasks that required authority and strategic oversight, which led me to adopt the title of business manager to reflect my expanded scope. This evolution helped me formalize processes and communicate clearer expectations to clients, enabling me to run authors' businesses more effectively rather than just handling tasks.
