  • One-sided

There is a lot of good information here. But what blows me away is the assumption that every independent author is left-leaning. Either the creators assume that, or they have produced this for only those who have the same “values.” Not inclusive.

  • They Support and are sponsored by Predatory companies.

Hello, I am just a little shocked that there is no accountability with an organization that claims to support authors. I paid for their membership and I believed I could trust their watchdog list, but was taken advantage of one of their highly rated members/partners/sponsors. Gatekeeper Press is one of this podcasts sponsors and in their ad even promises 100% satisfaction. There is nothing stating that if you are not satisfied they will force you to sign an NDA before offering any solutions. The... more

Inside Draft2Digital's New Author Fees, with Orna Ross and Kris Austin
Q: How will this affect authors with low earnings and those using pseudonyms?
The $12 maintenance fee is waived for authors earning $100+ per year; pseudonyms remain supported under one account, and publishers can publish under multiple names without incurring separate fees for each alias.
Inside Draft2Digital's New Author Fees, with Orna Ross and Kris Austin
Q: Were there alternative solutions considered besides the fees?
Yes. The team discussed identity verification, stricter onboarding, and other measures, but noted that while they already employ many controls, the fund model was chosen to sustain ongoing operations and future product development.
Inside Draft2Digital's New Author Fees, with Orna Ross and Kris Austin
Q: Take us through what changed at Draft2Digital and who pays the new fees.
Two new fees were introduced: a $20 activation fee to enable distribution and a $12 annual maintenance fee to access distribution and reporting tools; the fees target fraud and maintain service quality while waiving the maintenance fee for authors earning $100 or more through commissions.
Author Business Q&A: Profit, Pricing, and Publishing Strategy with Michael La Ronn and Joe Solari
Q: What is the biggest mindset shift that authors need to make when moving from writer to business?
The shift is to view the business as a creator alongside the stories, balancing the roles of creator, operator, and investor, and recognizing that profitability and a sustainable structure are as important as the artistic craft.
Inspirational Indie Author Interview #214: Michelle M. Pillow Builds a Lasting Career Through Romance and Reader Connection
Q: How do you balance a large backlist with new projects, and what role does direct selling play in your business?
I prioritize automation and organization to avoid admin overload, and use direct selling to offer signed copies, bundles, and exclusive promotions that strengthen reader loyalty while keeping a larger share of revenue.
