  • They Support and are sponsored by Predatory companies.

Hello, I am just a little shocked that there is no accountability with an organization that claims to support authors. I paid for their membership and I believed I could trust their watchdog list, but was taken advantage of one of their highly rated members/partners/sponsors. Gatekeeper Press is one of this podcasts sponsors and in their ad even promises 100% satisfaction. There is nothing stating that if you are not satisfied they will force you to sign an NDA before offering any solutions. The... more

Legal Reviews, ISBN Ownership, and Pre-Order Pitfalls: Member Q&A with Michael La Ronn and Sacha Black
Q: What should I consider when planning a professional cover and interior design, especially for self-publishing?
Leverage designer recommendations from genre peers, check the ALLi Discounts and Deals section and the Services directory for vetted designers and formatters, and use a few reliable sources to evaluate options before committing; the aim is to balance quality with cost and to ensure the chosen provider understands your market.
Legal Reviews, ISBN Ownership, and Pre-Order Pitfalls: Member Q&A with Michael La Ronn and Sacha Black
Q: Does final editing happen after formatting, or should editing precede formatting?
Editing and proofreading should be completed before formatting to avoid rework; you should not format first and then edit afterwards as it creates avoidable inefficiencies.
Legal Reviews, ISBN Ownership, and Pre-Order Pitfalls: Member Q&A with Michael La Ronn and Sacha Black
Q: What is your view on Goodreads giveaways and other cheap/low-cost promotional methods?
Investing in giveaways can be worthwhile but open, honest assessment is needed; if results are underwhelming, treat it as a learning expense and consider scaling the test to a smaller budget or using alternative list-building approaches like Book Funnel or Story Origin to optimize cost and impact.
Legal Reviews, ISBN Ownership, and Pre-Order Pitfalls: Member Q&A with Michael La Ronn and Sacha Black
Q: What is the recommended process and timing for adding references in a nonfiction manuscript?
Add references during the drafting stage to avoid losing sources and to protect against plagiarism. Gather references as you write so editors can verify them easily, and maintain organized notes to prevent ethical or factual issues later.
Legal Reviews, ISBN Ownership, and Pre-Order Pitfalls: Member Q&A with Michael La Ronn and Sacha Black
Q: Should I agree to a contract with a publishing services company that gives my ISBN to that company?
If you register the ISBN yourself, you remain the publisher of record; publishing companies usually take out the ISBN for you, and transferring ownership is not straightforward or recommended. In most cases, maintain control of the ISBN and ensure you understand who registers and who can transfer it before signing any contract.
