  • Informative, Interesting, and Entertaining

I only recently started listening to the Indy Author Podcast, but I can say that the resources, the interviews, and the subject matter covered are interesting, informative, and incredibly helpful.

I’m also a fan of the Creative Penn podcast. Matty’s podcast is complementary, covering original approaches to real-world problems, such as a recent episode covering dictation for fiction.

Highly recommended for indie and trade writers everywhere.

  • Validated!

I’ve been listening to this show for months now and have always enjoyed it, but Michael La Ronn’s wonderful interview about discovery writing using the style called cycling made me stop in my tracks! This is exactly my writing process and I always thought I was the only one using this method. Felt very validated and will be looking for his new book on the subject. Great podcast! Subscribe to it now!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Writing the Moments that Matter with Rene Gutteridge - #330
Q: How do you render the interiority of a moment differently in film versus a novel?
In film you must show, not tell; you visually convey action while relying on the audience to infer internal state, whereas in a novel you can use interior thoughts and monologue to let readers experience the protagonist's perspective and emotional reasoning.
A Poet's Guide to Craft, Publishing, and Community with Robert Lee Brewer - #329
Q: What should poets understand about submitting poetry and rights when they seek traditional publication?
Many places ask for three to five poems with a cover letter; poets should know what rights they are signing away, aim for first publication rights, and keep clear records of submissions to manage reprints and simultaneous submissions.
A Poet's Guide to Craft, Publishing, and Community with Robert Lee Brewer - #329
Q: So Robert, how did you first get started in poetry?
I started writing poetry in high school after composing a poem for a girl I liked; it grew into a broader fascination with poetry, self-publishing a fan scene and exploring poetry across different formats.
Reimagining Success Through Self-Advocacy and Collaboration with Laura Goode - #318
Q: What do you think a question is that our listeners should consider for themselves that would help crystallize some of the things that we've been talking about?
Is this person someone I want to emulate, and do I believe I was worthy of belonging and love?
Reimagining Success Through Self-Advocacy and Collaboration with Laura Goode - #318
Q: Can you just describe maybe for examples from your own life that would be applicable for authors about the kinds of collaborations, the artistic collaborations that you've had or that you've seen those around you have, and how you see that feeding into self-advocacy?
Collaborations enrich my writing journey and were often prompted by supportive friends who saw potential in me.
