Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars from 41 ratings
  • Refreshing episode

I rarely hear such candid conversations about cultural sensitivities and diabetes management. I notice much of the online information about diabetes management negates or simply ignores the cultural aspects of managing chronic illnesses. Collard greens are no less nutritious than kale and much of the online information on management lack culture perspective especially in the diet/nutrition area. Great episode. This was my first time hearing this podcast and I’m motivated to listen to past episod... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Burnout and the DCES, Part 1: Navigating Vulnerabilities
Q: Why does Diabetes Care lend itself to burnout among clinicians and educators, and how do system factors play into this?
Diabetes care demands long-term relationships and continuous management, along with challenges like access to supplies, complex technologies, and evolving workflows, which elevate cognitive and administrative burdens and contribute to burnout.
Burnout and the DCES, Part 1: Navigating Vulnerabilities
Q: What are the components of work-related burnout, and how do we see them manifest in healthcare providers?
Burnout comprises persistent exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment, with evidence that burnout is influenced by institutional factors, not just individual resilience, and can affect both clinicians and patients.
Making Sense of Processed Foods
Q: How should educators navigate conflicting information about processing while helping patients choose healthier options?
Educators should emphasize a whole-meal approach, assess overall dietary patterns, consider cultural and accessibility factors, and reassure patients that not all ultra-processed foods are inherently unhealthy if they contribute to a balanced diet with adequate fiber, micronutrients, and hydration.
Making Sense of Processed Foods
Q: What are one or two questions diabetes educators should be asking patients about ultra-processed foods in their homes?
Ask patients which foods they actually keep at home that they will eat, how often they purchase or eat them, and what nutritional gaps they are hoping to fill with those choices. This helps tailor guidance beyond the label ultra-processed versus not, focusing on real-life patterns and nutrients.
GLP-1s: Reshaping the Conversation
Q: How should educators address safety and long-term use of GLP-1 therapies?
Educators should thoroughly review history for pancreatitis, thyroid cancer risk factors (including MEN-2), monitor eye health due to retinopathy risk, and emphasize gradual dose titration and regular follow-up to manage side effects and prevent weight regain.
