  • Great Resource!!

ACDIS Radio is a great place for CDI, Coding, HIM & even Providers to come for industry updates and what’s happening in the CDI industry. I’m grateful that it’s now available via podcast! I was accustomed to missing the live shows due to a hectic schedule and would listen to archived shows. Now I can listen to the show via podcast during my commute to & from work. Great job ACDIS!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Collaborating around PSIs
Q: Which PSIs are most impactful for CDI and how should exclusions be pursued?
PSIs 9, 11, 12, and 13 tend to have the biggest impact; verify on-admission conditions for PSIs 9, scrutinize re-intubation reasons for 11, check prior presence of DVT/PE and imaging for 12, and confirm true sepsis and exclude alternative shock etiologies for 13.
Collaborating around PSIs
Q: What are some strategies that CDI programs can use to improve their PSI reporting and ensure PSIs are valid?
Create a multidisciplinary PSI committee that includes CDI, coding, quality, physician advisors, and possibly a surgeon to review op notes; involve OB-GYN for obstetric PSIs; consider wound care, radiology, and pharmacist input as needed; ensure review is tailored to each PSI and leverage provider education to reduce incorrect querying.
Listener questions: Pressure ulcers, AI, respiratory failure denials, and more!
Q: What strategy helps avoid denials for acute respiratory failure?
Clinically validate the diagnosis by aligning documentation with organizational criteria and national guidelines, clearly linking respiratory failure to its etiology, and ensuring consistent documentation across the chart including discharge summaries.
Listener questions: Pressure ulcers, AI, respiratory failure denials, and more!
Q: Should a query be sent for osteoporosis when fragility fractures lack explicit osteoporosis documentation?
Query for osteoporosis if there is true evidence; if not, determine etiology of the fragility fracture (e.g., cancer, meds). If no etiology is found, assign a broader fracture code and clarify etiology through querying.
Listener questions: Pressure ulcers, AI, respiratory failure denials, and more!
Q: How can CDI educators best utilize AI and other technology platforms to develop education for various ages of providers?
Provide multi-modal, age-aware content: quick mobile-friendly formats for younger clinicians (quizzes, micro-lessons, dashboards) and concise, high-impact points for experienced clinicians, plus adaptive paths and feedback loops; ensure AI-generated content is carefully validated.
