  • Great Resource!!

ACDIS Radio is a great place for CDI, Coding, HIM & even Providers to come for industry updates and what’s happening in the CDI industry. I’m grateful that it’s now available via podcast! I was accustomed to missing the live shows due to a hectic schedule and would listen to archived shows. Now I can listen to the show via podcast during my commute to & from work. Great job ACDIS!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Justifying additional staff
Q: What should be included or excluded in a business case for additional staff?
Include granular analyses of current workloads, time, PTO, and the distribution of reviews; exclude outliers (extremely high performers or underperformers) to avoid skewed targets, and emphasize the downstream financial and quality improvements tied to staffing decisions.
Justifying additional staff
Q: And I know that oftentimes leaders have to build a business case to justify adding another team member. Do you have any experience with this?
Yes. Start with discharging data on current capacity and then estimate how many CDS would be needed to reach close to 100 percent reviews, followed by calculating the financial impact and the overall value the new staff would bring month over month. If the numbers show strong ROI, push the case with leadership.
AI use in healthcare
Q: How does AI come into play with denials?
AI acts as a fast filter that screens claims for pattern alignment; misalignment can lead to unnecessary denials if terminology differs from what the algorithm expects, underscoring the need for clinician input and precise documentation.
AI use in healthcare
Q: Are there ethical or legal ramifications they should consider?
Yes, including risks of AI hallucinations and ensuring patient data remains protected, with emphasis on human verification and collaboration with IT and security teams to manage risk.
AI use in healthcare
Q: What are some of the ways that AI is being used in health care? And why is it so popular?
AI helps reduce clerical burden by automating tasks like narrative summarization of patient histories and real-time acuity scoring, enabling nurses to focus on direct patient care while AI handles data heavy lifting and suggests staffing changes when appropriate.
