Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside the world’s largest battery electric ferry
Q: What engineering challenges did the electric conversion pose and how were they addressed?
The ship uses lightweight aluminium construction, with new electric motors, switchboards, and batteries, developed in collaboration with suppliers, replacing traditional diesel generators, and leveraging proven water-jet propulsion.
Inside the world’s largest battery electric ferry
Q: Tell me how big this ship is and what has been achieved here with this vessel?
The vessel is 130 metres long, fits Panamax dimensions, carries around 2,100 passengers and 225 cars, and travels at about 25 knots with an approximately hour-long crossing and multiple daily return trips.
The hidden crisis behind rising electricity disconnections
Q: What conditions in Europe have led to lower disconnection rates, and can those lessons transfer to Australia?
Lower disconnection rates in France, Ireland, and Spain often accompany government involvement, regional arrangements, and proactive retailer engagement; trials show that when customers are reachable and supported, disconnections decline and repayment rates improve, indicating that policy design matters as much as market structure.
The hidden crisis behind rising electricity disconnections
Q: Nicola, do you think electricity disconnections should be prohibited here in Australia like in some European countries?
The only universal bans occurred during COVID; other models showed that while prohibitions can reduce disconnections, many households still experience hardship and need proactive support, suggesting a nuanced approach—protect vulnerable consumers while expanding viable debt solutions and outreach.
The plug-in solar hack that’s now booming in Germany
Q: What are the main concerns from landlords and co-ops, and how are they being addressed?
Concerns often relate to safety and liability, but Müller emphasizes that the 800-watt feed-in limit and standard mounting systems mitigate risk, with insurance covering damages and legal changes granting tenants the right to install, so long as it doesn't create an unbearable burden for landlords.
