  • Direct to the point

I’ve enjoyed this podcast for a few years, but I must say I’m really enjoying “direct David” over recent episode. It’s a climate crisis and David’s reducing patience with waffle and bollox is most welcome.

  • Great topic but hosts soapbox rather than interview

This podcast deals with a fascinating and important suite of issues.

Sadly, the hosts are not terrific interviewers. They load too many of their own opinions into questions and don’t ask short, inquiring questions that would permit the guests to speak.

  • Loving it until the Hydrogen Australia interview with David Cavanagh

    Gents,

I enjoy your show and regularly rate it 5 stars but the interview with David Cavanagh was frankly poor.

Hydrogen has been the renewable darling because everyone down to the layman knows that when it burns it makes clean water H2O.

    What they don’t know is:

    1. The cost? (unsubsidised)!

    2. Where it comes from? (the myriad of colours!!)

    3. That it is also a greenhouse gas, 11.6x GWP of CO2

    4. The inefficiency of production, storage, transport and losses along the way

    Etc.

  • Finally the facts come out

This is the most important podcast for Australia right now! Brilliant and informative. I’d love to hear Dr Karl K on there to talk about the state of climate in 2025

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"The grid doesn't need rotating mass"
Q: How is SMA adjusting its geographic focus in response to market conditions and geopolitical factors?
SMA has shifted toward large-scale utility applications, diversified into storage and grid-forming capabilities, and is aligning its supply chain to reduce reliance on single regions while maintaining global reach.
"The grid doesn't need rotating mass"
Q: Can inverters replace traditional rotating mass inertia, and what about fault current handling?
Modern inverters use MOSFET tech and fast switching to deliver short-circuit capabilities; with proper system design, including storage and medium-voltage connections, they can provide the needed fault current and dynamics.
"The grid doesn't need rotating mass"
Q: What is SMA's stance on grid-forming inverters and their ability to provide the same services as synchronous condensers?
We believe inverter-based resources can form the grid, stabilize frequency, and provide essential services when combined with storage and smart system design; this is not only possible but already demonstrated in various islands and large-scale deployments.
Tesla Energy boss on energy abundance, EVs, V2G and big and small batteries
Q: What is the practical path to vehicle-to-grid adoption, and how quickly could it scale given current technology and regulations?
Onboard vehicle inverters enabling vehicle-to-grid are the preferred path for cost and integration reasons, with trials ongoing and a timeline that depends on regulatory alignment and cost competitiveness; retrofits via external inverters are currently less favorable.
The man who saved solar and helped kill coal
Q: What role do subsidies play in the transition according to the hosts?
Subsidies are used to manage oversupply and keep existing coal plants running; a broader, market-stabilizing approach is needed to align incentives with rapid deployment of renewables and storage.
