  • Direct to the point

I’ve enjoyed this podcast for a few years, but I must say I’m really enjoying “direct David” over recent episode. It’s a climate crisis and David’s reducing patience with waffle and bollox is most welcome.

  • Great topic but hosts soapbox rather than interview

This podcast deals with a fascinating and important suite of issues.

Sadly, the hosts are not terrific interviewers. They load too many of their own opinions into questions and don’t ask short, inquiring questions that would permit the guests to speak.

  • Loving it until the Hydrogen Australia interview with David Cavanagh

    Gents,

I enjoy your show and regularly rate it 5 stars but the interview with David Cavanagh was frankly poor.

Hydrogen has been the renewable darling because everyone down to the layman knows that when it burns it makes clean water H2O.

    What they don’t know is:

    1. The cost? (unsubsidised)!

    2. Where it comes from? (the myriad of colours!!)

    3. That it is also a greenhouse gas, 11.6x GWP of CO2

    4. The inefficiency of production, storage, transport and losses along the way

    Etc.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The man who saved solar and helped kill coal
Q: What role do subsidies play in the transition according to the hosts?
Subsidies are used to manage oversupply and keep existing coal plants running; a broader, market-stabilizing approach is needed to align incentives with rapid deployment of renewables and storage.
The man who saved solar and helped kill coal
Q: What is the solution to the large-scale wind and solar project standstill?
Adopt simpler long-term PPAs rather than CIS/ LTSA, reduce policy complexity, and empower state-owned or contractually backed mechanisms to unlock new capacity while advancing household solar and storage to decrease the need for large-scale build.
Batteries take centre stage as world wrestles with fuel crisis
Q: What is BMI's view on the lithium price and its impact on storage costs?
Lithium price pressures are a key driver of near-term storage costs, as higher lithium prices feed into higher cell costs and system prices, though overall economics remain favorable for storage projects due to other cost declines and technology improvements.
Batteries take centre stage as world wrestles with fuel crisis
Q: How are policy and subsidy changes affecting EV demand and battery storage deployment across major regions?
Subsidy changes in China reduced the subsidy cliff for small EVs, shifting demand toward larger vehicles and affecting battery demand patterns; in Europe, 2035 targets have flexibility, with renewed subsidies targeting low-income families, while US policy remains more variable, influencing where investment goes.
Batteries take centre stage as world wrestles with fuel crisis
Q: What are your forecasts for utility-scale battery storage gigawatt hours in the next couple of years?
The projection is roughly 450 GWh in 2026 with about 500 GWh anticipated next year, and the market continuing to grow strongly in the following years as demand from energy storage and EVs remains high.
