  • Mainstream media

Excellent podcast. The Australia Institute provides data and analysis that should be used by mainstream media for its political, economic and social policy analysis. It seems solid answers to tax reform, the housing crisis, and other issues are not difficult if only governments would broaden their information input.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Victoria’s donations shambles puts rest of country “on notice”
Q: So Bill, what exactly was the nominated entity loophole and why did the High Court strike it down?
The loophole allowed entities connected to parties to skirt donation caps by channeling funds through foundations or investment arms that weren't subject to the cap, creating an uneven playing field. The High Court struck it down because restricting political communication through spending requires a reasonable and proportionate approach, and the existing loophole undermined that principle; thus, the court suggested the whole section be struck to give Parliament room to reform comprehensively.
Greens leader Larissa Waters on the housing crisis, gas exports & taxing the 1%
Q: Would these measures pass in Parliament with the Labour government?
The Greens would support tax reform and, with the Labour government, believe they have enough votes in the Senate to pass these measures if there is political will, implying the only barrier is the government's willingness to act.
Greens leader Larissa Waters on the housing crisis, gas exports & taxing the 1%
Q: How are you proposing that you would go about taxing the 1% and big corporations?
We launched a large online campaign to build momentum, arguing that the 99% should mobilize to demand a fairer tax system, including a wealth tax and ensuring firms pay their fair share of taxes.
David Pocock on getting a fair return for Australian gas
Q: Would it be accurate to say that the tax on offshore gas exports, PRRT, is still giving us less revenue than the tax on beer?
The guest explains that PRRT has underperformed, and contrasts it with beer taxes to illustrate how current revenue from offshore gas is insufficient, stressing the need for a simpler, revenue-based framework such as a 25% export tax which could raise substantial funds.
US allies reassess as Trump undermines global security
Q: What should Australia do in response to these developments?
She argues Australia should play a proactive diplomatic role, consider building new rules and institutions, and leverage Aukus while pursuing greater strategic autonomy and alignment with like-minded partners to shape a more stable international order.
