  • Good could be great

Always good well produced, substantial content but suffers from low energy vibe, makes it hard to stand out in a crowded market of political podcasts. Listener needs to build a bond with presenters which i find hard in this case

  • Great Premier Discussion

Tom’s discussion with Anna was moving. I remember Anna facing the media with ~7 Labour MLAs left. Great dedication to Qld, and she worked tirelessly to then go on and become our premier. Thank you.

  • Clare O’Neill and the housing crisis

Clare O’Neill is a superb politician, she knows her stuff whatever portfolio she is given. The interviewer was good on housing questions, but when he asked about climate change action he failed to follow up with why the govt is continuing to approve fossil fuel expansions and neglect the environment. Clare is so good she probably would have a given plausible sounding answer, but the govt is failing badly climate mitigation.

  • Is the Guardian hate media?!

Interview with Liberal Julian Leesa was pathetic. No probing questions or challenges to his assertions. This was like a Liberal party PR puff piece. I expect more critical questioning from the Guardian

  • One of my favourites

This was my favourite Saturday listen for a long time- I’m sad only to see it updated only twice a month now. I enjoyed immensely the long form interviews where you got to listen to (mostly) intelligent conversations with particular politicians (whether I like/agree with them or not) and policy experts. I don’t care who hosts, or if you rotate it around between the politics team…but please bring it back more frequently!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Guardian Essential report: a lukewarm response to Labor’s budget
Q: How might the perception of broken promises affect the government's political capital ahead of the next election?
While broken promises can hurt retail politics, the discussion suggests it is not inherently fatal and that the government may still be able to maintain momentum if they convincingly explain the rationale and long-term benefits of the reforms, particularly to young voters.
Guardian Essential report: a lukewarm response to Labor’s budget
Q: What does the poll indicate about public reception to the budget's broader changes beyond quick political wins?
The poll shows the public is skeptical about the budget's ability to deliver immediate, visible benefits, viewing it as long-term structural reform rather than a quick, populist handout, which means Labor needs to sustain a credible narrative about fairness and opportunity for future gains.
Tim Wilson on the Liberals’ economic vision
Q: Is mass migration a key political risk for your campaign?
Wilson argues the centre ground is Australians who want to get ahead, and that sustainable migration must align with absorption capacity to avoid long-term strain on housing and services.
Guardian Essential report: Australians don’t want the war on Iran – Australian politics podcast
Q: How might this shift in public mood affect Australia's budget and energy policy going into the next budget cycle?
The government faces pressure to balance spending with inflation concerns, potentially increasing domestic energy measures and considering reforms in housing, health, and a broader energy strategy in response to rising petrol prices and supply concerns.
Energy minister Chris Bowen on the impact of the fuel crisis
Q: What is the government's four-stage plan if the situation worsens?
The plan includes public information campaigns, coordination with states, and efforts to maintain supply with potential measures while keeping the public informed, aiming to avoid mandatory rationing.
