  • Semper verus

Good podcast most of the time. Interesting to hear Annabel Crabb talk about her schooling in the latest episode. She went to Wilderness, which is one of the most expensive, old money, private girls’ schools in Adelaide. Maybe she meant her primary schooling because her secondary school was top tier elite in the extreme and not many market gardeners there.

  • If you enjoy people out of depth

The analysis rarely gets beyond personality politics and surface level narratives. Too often, issues are “both sided” as though competing arguments carry equal weight simply because they’re attached to opposing parties. It makes comfortable, conventional commentary, but not insightful analysis on the issues. The ABC makes sure some issues are never mentioned. Most of the work of these journalists won’t last the political cycle - you can safely ignore it without impact.

  • What happens to this podcast?

This podcast is so variable, sometimes clear and considered and other times just trash.

The Phil Coorey episode was just weird, he was so one sided and was fully supported by PK, when Fran tried to push back she was silenced by PK. This is not journalism it is parroting the Murdock media/ liberal party talking points. The budget is interesting because it shows a real difference between the major parties but this has not been discussed. I could have a better discussion with my mates at the pub

  • PK’s Vanity Project .

If you enjoy a maniac, egotistic Karvelas taking over everyone and getting giddy with the Machiavellian aspects of politics - this is your show. I personally think PK is punishment.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is Australia ready for the AI transformation? | Insiders on Background
Q: What should Australia do next to avoid flattening its culture while adopting AI technologies?
Australia should pursue copyright reform, invest in domain adaptation and model localization (building Australian-specific or Australia-trained models), and implement governance that ensures AI supports regional development without eroding national identity.
Is Australia ready for the AI transformation? | Insiders on Background
Q: Before we come to your headline findings, how does this AI agency tool work and what exactly are you measuring?
The tool analyzes a country's capabilities to determine how much agency it has across various AI-related functions, moving beyond a binary 'have it or not' to a spectrum that includes access, control, choice, and export leverage, which helps map resilience and strategic options.
One Nation is surging. Why aren't the Greens?
Q: Andrew asks whether Angus Taylor changing or dying presents a risk for the Liberal Party's identity and electoral strategy.
Polls suggest a push toward a more conservative stance within the Liberal Party, but the party appears to be running to define its platform and broaden appeal rather than surrendering to a single faction.
One Nation is surging. Why aren't the Greens?
Q: Hi Fran and Patricia. Do you see opportunities for minor parties like the Greens to capitalise on One Nation's anti-establishment popularity, especially among voters who have shifted from Labour in the past?
The Greens have not capitalised as effectively as they could on left-wing populism, and there is a gap between their messaging and voters' perceptions; the party may need to embrace progressive economic populism to mobilise a broader base.
Budget bills, 'wedgies' and a teal party
Q: How might Tony Abbott's leadership affect the Liberal Party's strategy against One Nation?
The discussion frames Abbott as a high-energy, potentially divisive figure whose approach could be both a strength and a risk, possibly overshadowing other leaders and complicating party unity.
