  • Superb, insightful analysis

Love the Politics Now daily up to the minute analysis of current political events. PK is a wonderful daily host, so enthusiastic and nerdy about Australian politics. Fran & PK are superb hosts of The Party Room. And I love hearing the depth of political analysis from ABC journalists such as Jacob Greber, Raf Epstein and David Speers. Can’t have too much political analysis —this is a must listen podcast!

  • Best politics podcast available

I love the daily hit of politics. More so, I love the way that PK, Fran and all the guests make a point of presenting both sides regardless of their personal opinions. That is done so much so that I noticed that all the reviews that aren’t glowing are from people from either side of politics who think they favour the alternate side and yet there are such reviews from both sides. Well done on making this truly balanced!

  • Too much PK

Long term listener from the early Party Room days. Still a fan of Fran, but can’t deal with the daily Politics Now deluge. It’s not that PK is on every day (although she is) it’s the constant self references, the talking about herself, her life, her opinions, her altruistic obsession of politics, the editorialising instead of reporting, the talking over guests with her own opinions. Just too much. Finding other podcasts now.

  • Melbourne-centric

‘PK’ and her mates (usually from Melbourne) prattle on excitedly, mostly about trivia. If it hasn’t happened in Canberra or Melbourne, you won’t hear about it on this podcast. Avoid.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How one swing voter decided the rate hike
Q: Are we going to see more rate hikes?
The guest indicates that further hikes depend on inflation trends and energy prices, with markets pricing in further moves but still uncertain, especially given the energy shock and policy signals.
Demand for fuel has gone up, but when will petrol prices come back down?
Q: What about potential government actions like the Liquid Fuel Emergency Act—are you prepared for that?
The industry recognizes the powers exist to direct supply if needed, but the aim is to avoid rationing and to maintain confidence in supply; preparedness focuses on keeping essential flows running while markets adjust.
Demand for fuel has gone up, but when will petrol prices come back down?
Q: What is your message to motorists currently facing high prices and shortages?
Apologetic and empathetic; the price is driven by international dynamics and supply constraints, and while it may stay elevated temporarily, there is an expectation of gradual improvement as supply chains restore and refiners respond to demand.
Demand for fuel has gone up, but when will petrol prices come back down?
Q: What happens if this crisis continues for a few more weeks, especially into mid-April?
Industry practices involve rolling cargo contracts and a few spot shipments; mid-April is a turning point where cargo bookings and government decisions will shape supply, but continued disruption could tighten imports unless other regions resume exports.
Demand for fuel has gone up, but when will petrol prices come back down?
Q: Why can't independents get supply when there is supply overall?
Some supply is under contract or reserved for major buyers, while others rely on the spot market; distribution challenges and the rapid surge in demand in the first weeks exhausted buffers, leading to limited availability for independents.
