Great pod from MG. Have always loved her interviews. My only request is for more complete show notes. Including guest names, links etc. Small potatoes really.

  • Australian culture IS Aboriginal culture

In regards to your interview with Tony Abbott about his new history of Australia book. I think the thing that is missing when people write and talk about what colonisation bright to modern Australia is what the original inhabitants brought. I would love to read scholarship about how Australia’s unique Aussie vibe is a result of interactions with the first people and the impact they had on the way out Democracy and national “personality” evolved.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Graeme Samuel on 'doomsday' attacks on the federal budget
Q: Graeme Samuel, you've been watching and involved in economic changes for a very long time. How did the tax reforms in this budget compare with the reforms of prime ministers and treasurers of the past?
He argues they are milder than the 1980s Keating-Hawke reforms, but still significant in shifting incentives and addressing distortions, with a strong emphasis on equity and a careful, phased approach to reform.
Margaret Thornton on the landmark Tickle v Giggle transgender case
Q: Margaret Thornton, can you give us just a brief resume of this case and its background?
Margaret Thornton provides an overview of Giggle for Girls, Roxanne Tickle's discrimination complaint under the Sex Discrimination Act, the federal court ruling in favor of Tickle, and the subsequent appeals that affirmed the damages after a cross-appeal.
Jim Chalmers says 'we're in the cart' for more tax relief
Q: Can you just walk us through this briefly?
The guest explains the rationale for the tax reform package, its architecture to adjust work versus asset taxation, and the intent to provide future tax relief as the budget allows. He emphasizes that the reforms aim to give future governments tools to reduce taxes for workers via the Working Australians Tax Offset.
Tim Wilson on the budget's hidden hits on young Australians
Q: So without being precise, do you think a liberal government could at least do better than the mid-30s?
Tim Wilson argues yes, outlining a plan to constrain spending and reduce the debt-to-GDP trend, while criticizing the current government's tax increases and their impact on growth and affordability.
Former minister Ed Husic on why Labor must 'stare down' gas companies over tax
Q: Ed Husic, what are the arguments for a new tax on gas exports and how do you reply to those who say it would just discourage investment?
Husic argues that LNG exports have risen substantially with little royalty revenue and that a well-structured tax could fund national priorities like energy independence; he asserts the government can secure a social license to tax by ensuring revenues are used to bolster national resilience, including fuel security, and that investment would not be deterred if the framework supports long-term national interests.
