  • An excellent listen for people passionate about medicine and health care

I love a good health care system podcast and this one is fantastic! Many of the others I listen to take on health care from the perspective of journalists or businesspeople, which is valuable, but this is the best podcast out there that talks about systemic health care issues from the physicians’ perspective. Chris is a great host and the production values are high, but it is really the physician guests that blow me away. I particularly enjoyed the episodes on Permanente’s history and the more r... more

  • Hidden gem! Enjoy insights into the world of medicine

With the onset of our new covid reality, health care in America became the most interesting topic in podcast land — but given how many crackpots are out there, you can imagine how hard it was to find sober and informed information from medical leaders and physicians. This series provides insider views and concerns about the state of the industry and technology, as well as the human toll, of providing humane care to a people who don’t understand how care systems work. And they’re short!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep.39: Designing care that delivers quality, access, and affordability
Q: How do you define access beyond appointment availability, and what's a concrete example of improving access?
Access is about minimizing disruption to a patient's life and making the care journey as easy as possible, such as the one-day TAVR evaluation program which condensed testing into a single day to reduce waiting and caregiver burden.
Ep.39: Designing care that delivers quality, access, and affordability
Q: What does a value-based, integrated care model mean for physicians and patients in practical terms?
It means physicians can focus on practicing medicine with minimal administrative friction, a community and culture that supports clinicians, and leadership structures that ensure the right path for medications and access to specialists is determined ahead of time, all within a single EMR and formulary that facilitates coordinated care.
Ep.39: Designing care that delivers quality, access, and affordability
Q: From your perspective, what has contributed to the staying power of Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic region, and what will help you grow in that critical area?
The staying power comes from consistent, trusted, high-quality care that is easy to access and affordable, supported by a unified system where clinicians and patients participate in shared decision-making. Growth will rely on maintaining that integrated model, expanding how we communicate value, and continuing to simplify the care journey for patients.
Ep. 38 Quality care in a value-based system
Q: How do demographic shifts and changes in patient expectations influence care delivery and the role of technology?
The system must adapt to aging populations, diverse disease patterns, and the rising demand for convenient, accessible care; technology, when vetted for safety and efficacy, can augment care delivery while preserving the physician-patient relationship.
Ep. 38 Quality care in a value-based system
Q: Why is quality so central to Kaiser Permanente's approach, and how does it relate to value-based care?
Quality is the North Star and the foundation upon which prevention, survivorship, and longitudinal care are built; value-based care emerges from delivering evidence-based, patient-centered care at the right time across the patient journey.
