  • Informative but…

This podcast provides great content and overviews about the JAMA articles. However I often find the discussion feels very scripted and less engaging. I would prefer to hear real discussions from the authors rather than carefully read responses. Previous host (Ed Livingston) was much better at sparking discussions, and occasional new temporary hosts are good.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the JAMA Network: Acetaminophen Use in Pregnancy and Risk of Autism
Q: Could you briefly summarize the limitations of the study?
The primary limitation is that it is not a randomized controlled trial, the gold standard of evidence, and there could be issues of comparison between different populations due to varying acetaminophen usage rates.
From the JAMA Network: Acetaminophen Use in Pregnancy and Risk of Autism
Q: How will the evidence from this study help patients and their clinicians consider the risks of judicious acetaminophen use in pregnancy?
The study adds evidence to alleviate a mother's concerns that taking acetaminophen might be harmful, emphasizing that judicious use is still warranted under clinical guidance.
From the JAMA Network: Acetaminophen Use in Pregnancy and Risk of Autism
Q: What were the major findings of your study published in JAMA in 2024?
The study found no increased risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disabilities in children of women who used acetaminophen during pregnancy after controlling for confounders using sibling analysis.
Superficial Vein Thrombosis
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about what superficial vein thrombosis is one of the most important reasons that we choose to treat some of the patients?
It's important because if the thrombus were to propagate, we get to treat them as if it's a DVT due to systemic risks.
Superficial Vein Thrombosis
Q: Could you just tell us what is superficial venous thrombosis and how common is it?
Superficial vein thrombosis happens when there is a thrombus, a clot, within the superficial veins in the body, causing local symptoms and discomfort.
