  • I was skeptical.

Had no idea who the host was, wasn’t really interested in the topic, but wow! This is very well produced, edited and thoughtful podcast. I wish I could give it six stars. Every episode makes me evaluate my own writing in different ways, not even from book writing but just in general! Keep up the great work! Thank you for making such great content!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

25: Writing Fiction for the New Yorker, with Molly Aitken
Q: What advice would Molly give about writing brave, personal stories?
Embrace editing as a glorious part of the process, face the potential exposure of writing about close-to-home topics, and recognize that sharing difficult experiences can build a stronger, more resonant work; also, be willing to rewrite and trust the craft over the initial perfect vision.
25: Writing Fiction for the New Yorker, with Molly Aitken
Q: What was it like being edited by the New Yorker, and how did that differ from previous editorial experiences?
Editing at the New Yorker was intensely detailed and collaborative, with line edits and punctuation refinement in a Google Doc, a level of scrutiny Molly hadn't experienced before, and left her with a deeper appreciation for how editors draw out the precise voice and humanity in a piece.
25: Writing Fiction for the New Yorker, with Molly Aitken
Q: How did Molly come to have a New Yorker short story published, and what was the process like?
Molly wrote This Is How It Happens inspired by family history, submitted it in second-person, and after a delayed but persistent process—including a notable year-long gap and a late-night, edge-of-deadline editing phase by editor Deborah Treisman—it was accepted and meticulously edited before publication.
21: Working to Decolonise the Curriculum, Writing and ADHD, with Marcia Hutchinson
Q: What sparked your move from law to education publishing and storytelling?
She describes a driving need to improve self-esteem for Black children through visible representations and culturally aware teaching materials, which evolved into Primary Colours and a broader mission to decolonize curricula.
14: Staying Balanced in the World of Publishing, with Kate Kemp
Q: How did you get your agent for The Grapevine?
An anthology circulated to agents during the Curtis Brown course, Kemp attracted interest, and after finishing the manuscript, an agent she admired (Nell Andrew) became involved, leading to representation and an auction for the book.
