The early episodes are priceless for someone, like me, who has always wanted to write a novel, but had no idea how to approach it. I am learning so much about overall structure, internal genre, character development, incorporating backstory, and so much more from this podcast. I can see significant improvements in my work, and gaining the confidence to keep going. I’ve written 50 000 words, largely propelled by Savannah. Even the simple advice, ‘write now, edit later,’ was a revelation.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#239. Student Spotlight: How J.J. Henley Finished Her First Draft in 8 Months (With Two Kids and In 15 Minutes at a Time)
Q: What did the course reveal about genre blending and outlining?
The course helped her understand how to weave romance into thriller components, align genre with commercial expectations, and realize that outlining is a crucial foundation, not a final step.
#239. Student Spotlight: How J.J. Henley Finished Her First Draft in 8 Months (With Two Kids and In 15 Minutes at a Time)
Q: How long did it take to finish the first draft and what were the big disruptions?
Eight months from October to June, with major interruptions from parenting duties like no two-hour daytime blocks and late-night writing sessions, yet the outline kept her connected to the story.
#236. The Truth About AI and Creative Writing with Ana Del Valle
Q: Do I have to disclose when I use AI to write or brainstorm for traditional publishing or querying?
You do not have to disclose AI-assisted outlining or brainstorming in most cases. The key is to maintain agency and ensure the final manuscript reflects your voice; if the work is AI-generated, it becomes a different legal issue. Disclosure is generally not required for AI assist usage.
#236. The Truth About AI and Creative Writing with Ana Del Valle
Q: Is AI going to steal my work or replace me as a writer?
No. AI is not a data repository that steals ideas or writes the book by itself. If used for outlining, feedback, and structure, and with heavy author editing, the work remains the author's. AI generation that writes the full draft is not considered; proper use is AI assist, not replacement.
#236. The Truth About AI and Creative Writing with Ana Del Valle
Q: What does AI Assist mean for writers who might not know what that term means?
AI Assist is using AI to help with the entire life cycle of novel writing—story development, market placement, outlining, and structural work—while the writer does the actual writing and retains creative control and voice.
