  • Production Changes?

I have loved listening to this podcast for a very long time, but lately I’ve been skipping more episodes than I’m listening to.

This is because the host's audio is normal and clear, but the guest is barely audible. This uneven volume level makes for a very unpleasant experience, so I haven’t listened much lately. I’m hoping this production issue can be rectified

  • Nuggets to Revelations

I decided to learn to write fiction as a New Year’s resolution in 2020, and this is one of the first and most useful podcasts I found. I don’t think I’ve missed a single episode in six years. Barbara and Marrie‘s interview styles are different. Still, they’re both very smart, good questioners and adept at getting at least wonderful nuggets and sometimes flat out revelations out of their guests. Don’t miss this.

  • Essential, Enjoyable Listening

For readers and writers who love to hear people talk about the craft and the business of books. Barbara and Marrie are highly skilled interviewers that make it seem as easy as two people having a conversation that you’re overhearing from a table nearby. Great stuff.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Estelle Erasmus, author of WRITING THAT GETS NOTICED
Q: How should new writers think about finding their voice and building bylines?
She advises doing a variety of writing tasks to build clips, using blogs and local outlets for bylines, and then leveraging personal experiences with a strong voice to anchor essays and features.
Estelle Erasmus, author of WRITING THAT GETS NOTICED
Q: What is the difference between pitching an article and pitching an essay?
She emphasizes that a pitch for an article includes a hook, lead author or study, and a few clips, whereas an essay pitch centers on the voice, structure, and final execution, with publications often asking to see the completed essay.
T.C. Boyle, author of NO WAY HOME
Q: What role does environment play in No Way Home?
Environment is the core theme across his work, here tied to the Nevada setting near the Hoover Dam, with the landscape shaping character behavior and the story's ethical concerns.
T.C. Boyle, author of NO WAY HOME
Q: How do you decide whether an idea becomes a short story or a novel?
Boyle describes an intuitive, evolving process: he follows the first line, lets the idea stew, and allows the form to reveal itself through writing, sometimes shifting from story to novel as the characters demand.
Dylan Landis, author of LIST OF ALL POSSIBLE DESIRES: A Novel in Stories
Q: Is Rainey coming back? Is she going to show up in Book Four?
They all are—Rainey, Tina, and Leigh—popping back in as part of the ongoing universe the author has created for these interconnected stories.
