  • Production Changes?

I have loved listening to this podcast for a very long time, but lately I’ve been skipping more episodes than I’m listening to.

This is because the host's audio is normal and clear, but the guest is barely audible. This uneven volume level makes for a very unpleasant experience, so I haven’t listened much lately. I’m hoping this production issue can be rectified

  • Nuggets to Revelations

I decided to learn to write fiction as a New Year’s resolution in 2020, and this is one of the first and most useful podcasts I found. I don’t think I’ve missed a single episode in six years. Barbara and Marrie‘s interview styles are different. Still, they’re both very smart, good questioners and adept at getting at least wonderful nuggets and sometimes flat out revelations out of their guests. Don’t miss this.

  • Essential, Enjoyable Listening

For readers and writers who love to hear people talk about the craft and the business of books. Barbara and Marrie are highly skilled interviewers that make it seem as easy as two people having a conversation that you’re overhearing from a table nearby. Great stuff.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Elizabeth Strout, author of THE THINGS WE NEVER SAY
Q: How did you decide on the point of view for The Things We Never Say?
The book started with a focus on Artie through his eyes, a third-person perspective centered on his experiences, and later incorporated direct, brief interruptions to address the reader, which became a distinctive technique.
Stacey Abrams, author of CODED JUSTICE
Q: On Coded Justice, why did you choose Avery as the protagonist and how did you develop her long-term arc across books?
Avery came to me as someone who could be thrust into big questions but still choose to engage rather than opt out; I planned a through-line that would balance legal complexity with human, relatable stakes, allowing her to evolve across multiple novels.
Stacey Abrams, author of CODED JUSTICE
Q: So, let's start with all the incredibly important jobs you do and the state of our dismal world today. Why devote your energy to fiction?
Fiction lets me meet people where they are and to tell stories that illuminate real-world issues; it's about using narrative to bring audiences into conversations on social justice, DEI, and policy, while still delivering a compelling, propulsive story.
Hafeez Lakhani, author of ABUNDANCE
Q: So then what happened? And what about your editor and agent?
The agent Gail Hoffman came through a personal connection and a conference meeting, leading to a productive partnership; the editor Dan Lopez at Counterpoint brought hands-on, collaborative edits that refined the POV and overall structure.
Cassandra Neyenesch, author of A LITTLE BIT BAD
Q: What role did editing play in shaping the final book?
Editing was crucial; it included separating chapters into individual documents to avoid mid-story drift, trimming words, removing unnecessary chapters, and embracing a rigorous revision process guided by feedback and professional editing.
