  • Conversations beyond the page

I so look forward to every episode of this podcast! Christine asks such thoughtful, probing questions that each conversation feels like an invitation to go beyond the pages of the memoir and into the heart of the author’s experiences. Each episode leaves me with a richer appreciation for women’s stories, wild places, and the ways they shape one another. The perfect companion to Christine’s outdoorsy women book club! I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

America the Beautiful? by Blythe Roberson (Book Club)
Q: How do you balance the heavy climate-change material with humor and accessibility?
I treat humor as a gateway to heavier topics, using lighter moments to invite readers in and then gradually introduce the deeper context and necessary information so they can engage and seek out further resources on their own.
America the Beautiful? by Blythe Roberson (Book Club)
Q: What resources did you use to uncover Indigenous histories and the true histories of these parks?
I relied on a wide range of sources, including Indigenous scholars, updated park maps, and a rigorous archival approach. I kept a detailed reading log and pushed to incorporate voices that had been overlooked or misrepresented, even when it was uncomfortable.
America the Beautiful? by Blythe Roberson (Book Club)
Q: Can you talk a little bit about your idea for this trip and how that all came to be?
The idea grew from wanting to write a book about gender and travel inspired by other writers like Bill Bryson, but with a focus on healing and social topics rather than trauma. I pitched a road trip memoir that would examine national parks through a feminist lens and include the history and people behind these places.
