  • Come for the Corvidology, Stay for the Cardiology

At once accessible, engaging and delightful, Alie uncovers the fascinating in the Ologists she interviews. I especially want to thank Alie for mentioning that cutting back on caffeine has helped lower her anxiety level. I heard that, thought I need to try, and hot damn, I am now a lot less anxious than I used to be (still anxious, but, you know, less). Thank you PodDad!

  • Fixed my broken brain

Ologies has long been my favorite show and my friends increasingly least favorite topic to have me bring up / fun fact drop every time we get together. BUT finally leaving my first review after revisiting the concussion episode after having my own “knocked pumpkin” episode recently. I listened when it first came out, but BOY HOWDY did it hit different this time (no pun intended). At 3 weeks in and mild symptoms still persistent, I’ve been spiraling about my brain being broken forever, but the we... more

  • The best hiking companion

Hi! I have loved this podcast for many months and use it to entertain my brain while I drive, knit, etc. Recently I have been working on my tolerance for hiking by tackling the mountain near me every couple weeks. Today, I learned about cannabis, donkeys, and the colon on my sojourn. Thank you for helping me keep my body and mind healthy!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dolorology (PAIN) Encore with Rachel Zoffness
Q: How do medications like opioids work in relation to pain?
Pain medications generally block brain receptors to dampen pain signals, but long-term use can lead to brain sensitization, increasing pain sensitivity.
Dolorology (PAIN) Encore with Rachel Zoffness
Q: What is pain?
Pain is a biopsychosocial experience constructed by the brain, influenced by biology, psychology, and social context, and can occur with or without tissue damage.
Salugenology (WHY HUMANS REQUIRE HOBBIES) Part 2 with Julia Hotz
Q: How do you address skepticism about social prescribing as a real medical practice?
Rationale rests on longitudinal evidence showing benefits of belonging, movement, and nature; doctors should frame it as an option on the health menu rather than a replacement for existing treatments.
Megafelinology (SNOW LEOPARDS + OTHER BIG CATS) with Imogene Cancellare
Q: What safety advice is given for encounters with big cats in the wild?
Make eye contact, appear large, yell, and be prepared to defend yourself with a sturdy object; avoid turning your back and do not rely on negotiation with the animal in close proximity.
Megafelinology (SNOW LEOPARDS + OTHER BIG CATS) with Imogene Cancellare
Q: How do big cats use their tails, and why do some have shortened tails like the lynxes?
Tails aid balance and communication; short tails in lynxes relate to their ambush hunting strategy and need for maneuverability rather than long-range balance, with domesticates showing variation due to breed genetics.
