  • Advertising AI? No, thank you!

A podcast dedicated to science communication that betters the human condition should not take advertising dollars from AI—the thing that objectively makes the human condition worse.

And, no, Wendy, you don’t get to preface your show with a “we hear you” non-apology and then advertise Amazon AI in THE VERY SAME EPISODE! Science Vs has lost all credibility with me. Unfollow.

  • Unprincipled AI support

Lost me when you started accepting advertising revenue from AI companies and running episodes talking about how you use AI to figure out trivial things like which wine to buy. Aside from the obvious ethical issues, if you’re using AI to research your show topics, the likelihood of hallucinated or misrepresented sources should alarm everyone.

  • The Ibogaine Episode is Irresponsible

I have enjoyed this podcast over the years but I have been extremely disappointed by several recent episodes. The episode on ibogaine is completely irresponsible and not well researched at all. There is zero mention of any of the standard-of-care FDA approved treatments for opioid use disorder that have long track records of safety and effectiveness, including a mortality benefit. This episode essentially promotes a high-risk, expensive and experimental treatment that does not have any data up t... more

Caffeine: How Much Is Too Much?
Q: Are energy drinks uniquely dangerous compared to coffee?
Energy drinks may affect the QT interval of the heart in some individuals, especially those with pre-existing heart conditions, while caffeine alone in coffee does not show the same effect in similar studies.
Caffeine: How Much Is Too Much?
Q: How much sleep is affected by caffeine, and does it depend on the person?
On average, caffeine reduces evening sleep by about 30 minutes total, roughly 15 minutes per cup, and the amount varies significantly based on genetics, with slow metabolizers experiencing more sleep loss.
Caffeine: How Much Is Too Much?
Q: What does caffeine do in the brain that wakes us up?
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, which normally promote sleepiness, and it also stimulates dopamine, contributing to a mood boost and increased alertness.
Hantavirus: How Scary Is It??
Q: What makes hantavirus dangerous and how does it progress in a patient?
Hantavirus damages the endothelial lining of blood vessels, leading to capillary leakage, fluid buildup in the lungs, and often a rapid decline once symptoms escalate; the immune response can also cause a cytokine storm, compounding organ injury.
Vaping: Does It Really Cause Cancer?
Q: How does vaping compare to smoking in terms of cancer risk?
Most experts think vaping is safer than smoking, especially for cardiovascular health, but when it comes to cancer, the evidence is not definitive and depends on many variables including duration and exposure; further data are needed.
