  • How to actually stop scrolling

They didn’t mention the many very effective website and app blockers out there. I use ScreenZen because of the price, but there are many similar ones. I set it up so I open a social media app, scroll for five minutes and then it’s blocked and I can’t open it for another 2 hours. At night I can’t open them at all. The only way for me to override is to endure a 30 minute waiting period or pay a small fee, so it’s not something I have done often, and my life is much better for it. It seems crazy to... more

This is a fantastic science show. I’ve been listening for years. I will say I prefer the more science focused content over bio/psycho stuff. I realize that sounds stupid, but I’m saying that I constantly deal with people, so would rather learn about pangolins and how they didn’t do anything wrong.

    Love, love

I used to listen regularly. Then I took a break. I am back, based on a recommendation by Adam Grant. In my experience, when Adam says he's listening to a podcast, it's a gift worth receiving!

  • Always Good!

Wide variety of topics. Always an informative show. Would love an episode on hysteria. What exactly is hysteria? Is there something going on today that qualifies as hysteria?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How To Stop Scrolling
Q: What intervention proved most effective across studies?
The grayscale strategy stood out as the most promising long-term approach, with participants cutting time spent on their phones by substantial amounts and reporting less urge to scroll once accustomed to grayscale.
How To Stop Scrolling
Q: What was the outcome of the strong lockout intervention?
Strong lockout reduced daily phone use by about 75 minutes but increased frustration and stress, especially as the lockout time neared, suggesting it's effective but harsh and not well liked.
How To Stop Scrolling
Q: Why is scrolling more harmful than other phone activities according to the studies discussed?
Studies show people regret scrolling more than other activities like communicating or seeking information, and report greater meaninglessness after long scrolling sessions, which helps explain why it feels worse after doom scrolling.
The Great Mysteries of Sex with Mary Roach
Q: What made you decide to write about the science of sex for your third book?
Roach explains that a chance encounter with old lab materials and the potential to reveal the human body's bizarre, fascinating behaviors drew her to explore sex research in a way that pairs scientific scrutiny with human storytelling.
Colon Cancer: Should Young People Worry?
Q: What is driving the rise of colorectal cancer in young people?
The episode suggests a combination of later diagnoses due to lack of screening in younger people, possible changes in environmental exposure and microbiome, and emerging genetic evidence linking early bacteria-driven DNA damage to cancer later in life.
