  • Waving a flag for Vaping

Geez the producer seems to have a clear positive bias on vaping. Apparently I’m a “goody two shoes” for not smoking or vaping. Usually like this pod but this on is no good

  • Upward inflection vs Science

I usually really like this show, it covers interesting topics in an easy to digest format. Unfortunately this last episode with Ekedi Fausther-Keeys filling in was not an enjoyable listening experience. The upward inflection in her voice made every sentence seem like a question and made it sound like she had no confidence in anything she was saying. Team that with holding on to the final syllable of many words and the episode just draaaggged. This might just be me being a grumpy old curmudgeon a... more

  • The best science podcast

Science, in the end is not about what you think. It’s all about how you think. This incredible team knows how to break down the issue into questions that can be answered. I love the balance view and appreciate how they are able to acknowledge when they don’t know for sure and can’t draw a conclusion.

    And it’s entertaining !

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hantavirus: How Scary Is It??
Q: What makes hantavirus dangerous and how does it progress in a patient?
Hantavirus damages the endothelial lining of blood vessels, leading to capillary leakage, fluid buildup in the lungs, and often a rapid decline once symptoms escalate; the immune response can also cause a cytokine storm, compounding organ injury.
Vaping: Does It Really Cause Cancer?
Q: How does vaping compare to smoking in terms of cancer risk?
Most experts think vaping is safer than smoking, especially for cardiovascular health, but when it comes to cancer, the evidence is not definitive and depends on many variables including duration and exposure; further data are needed.
How To Stop Scrolling
Q: What intervention proved most effective across studies?
The grayscale strategy stood out as the most promising long-term approach, with participants cutting time spent on their phones by substantial amounts and reporting less urge to scroll once accustomed to grayscale.
How To Stop Scrolling
Q: What was the outcome of the strong lockout intervention?
Strong lockout reduced daily phone use by about 75 minutes but increased frustration and stress, especially as the lockout time neared, suggesting it's effective but harsh and not well liked.
How To Stop Scrolling
Q: Why is scrolling more harmful than other phone activities according to the studies discussed?
Studies show people regret scrolling more than other activities like communicating or seeking information, and report greater meaninglessness after long scrolling sessions, which helps explain why it feels worse after doom scrolling.
