  • This is an awesome podcast with great banter between the cohosts. If you are looking to learn how to be successful, just follow Carl's advice, or just do the opposite of what Derek recommends. Carl claims to not be detail oriented, but he cross-examines Derek like an experienced DA on Law and Order. Derek is a good sport and takes it all with a laugh. The constant ribbing and dead-pan humor has me laughing out loud, and my kids love them. Subscribe now.

JEFF PELLETIER: Controversial Gear Decisions For The Last Great Adventure (Throwback Thursday)
Q: How do you decide between road and trail footwear for long-distance trails?
Footwear choice depends on the terrain and the load you're carrying. Trail shoes are generally preferred for traction on rough trails, but if the environment is forgiving and the miles are lower, lighter road shoes can work; however, foot handling and shoe durability must be your primary consideration.

Q: What is your approach to minimizing gear while staying safe on long missions?
The core idea is to make sure every piece of gear serves multiple purposes, remains reliable, and is tested well in advance. You prioritize functionality over sheer minimalism and always have a plan for light, but never at the expense of safety, such as keeping a dependable headlamp and a weather-ready shell.
