  • Lost its luster.

Unfortunately, Meateater is just a shadow of what it once was. What really made it great was that it was relatable, down to earth and compelling. Now it’s just like any other hunting media organization. Profit over all else.

  • Video format problems

In a recent episode you addressed the issues your listeners are having since adding the video component to you podcasts, something I have complained about, but said that because Apple is promoting your show more you don’t care. So until the issues are fixed I am unsubscribing. Plenty of other hunting podcasts where I won’t constantly have issues with freezing and skipping around or just not downloading. Also the new format of separate interview, news, and trivia shows sucks compared to the old e... more

  • hunters are cowards

having to not only use a weapon but also sneak up on a defenceless animal is elite coward behaviour. like fish literally don’t even have arms and you call it a sport? absurd. steal any good candy from any babies recently, tough guys? lol 🙄 get a life

  • Production of Podcast Fell Off a Cliff

I’ve been a long time listener. I enjoy the content. But the last couple of weeks of podcasts have become unlistenable due to the technical glitches. Podcasts skip around, restart on their own, have the ends cut off and can’t handle simple scrubbing to different parts of the podcast. Maybe it is the platform, but it’s horrible now.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 920: News from the Fish Shack - Cornell Bans Butchering, The Alaska Fishing Report, and America’s Youth Speak Out
Q: What is avian botulism and why is it affecting the Klamath Basin ducks this year?
Avian botulism is a bacterial toxin that proliferates in warm, shallow water; it paralyzes birds when they ingest contaminated larvae or organisms, leading to drowning or secondary deaths. The outbreak is driven by low water, high temperatures, and dwindling wetlands, creating ideal conditions for botulism in the Klamath Basin.
Ep. 919: Game On, Suckers! MeatEater Trivia CCXXX
Q: Name the two countries whose border crosses the peak of Mount Everest.
Nepal and China (Tibet).
Ep. 921: Scent, Smell, and Science: Olfaction in Humans, Deer, and Dogs
Q: How important is wind direction and weather in scent tracking for hounds and humans?
Wind, humidity, and temperature critically affect odor plumes. Scent lingers and travels differently in humid, warm air versus cold, dry air, and turbulent winds can both aid and hinder tracking depending on surface textures and terrain.
Ep. 921: Scent, Smell, and Science: Olfaction in Humans, Deer, and Dogs
Q: Can a synthetic scent fool a deer's nose the way a predator lure might?
Not easily; deer use a multi-gland, multi-component olfactory system that is population-specific. A generic scent would likely fail to reliably fool bucks across populations, as individuals carry unique scent signatures.
Ep. 911: Makah Whaling Practices, Treaty Rights, and Regulatory Challenges
Q: Why did the Makah decide to resume whaling after such a long hiatus?
Because the population recovered, allowing a meaningful renewal of treaty rights, and leaders believed a regulated, quota-based approach could restore cultural practices and community resilience while engaging with regulatory bodies.
