I’m learning a lot about the ancient American West. Really enjoyed the cast on the Paleo-Indians, Clovis. Wasn’t really aware of any of this history. Very interesting stuff. Thanks guys, keep up the good work.

Dan Flores..... you are amazing. I'm on the Missouri right now cooking for an outfitter and guide. I just met a guide on the trip who was student of yours. Needless to say I was so jealous and had many questions . Your depth of knowledge and conveyance to the reader is beyond comprehension for us mere mortals. No wonder Steve Rinella has taken you onto his team. "Surround yourself with people better than you", and Steve is up there on his story telling and mastery of writing. Thank you for sha... more

  • just give me Dan

Anything that Dan Flores presnts is excellent! I just want a podcast on that, full stop. But there is an insistence on a post podcast interview/ Q&A with Steven Rhinella that is just terrible. It offers NOTHING of value to an episode. I tend to stop most episodes once this q&a starts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 34: Big Bend and the Deserts of the West
Q: Dan, in this episode, you're talking about deserts and specifically the Chihuahua Desert.
The discussion frames deserts as discrete, culturally meaningful landscapes that require both exploration and long-term engagement to be understood, highlighting how individual experiences with deserts can grow into larger cultural and institutional shifts, like the creation of national parks in the region.
Ep. 35: How the Endangered Species Act Saved the West and America
Q: What makes this act so radical in terms of government power and moral expansion to non-human life
It represents a fundamental shift where the government recognizes a right to exist for species, extending moral consideration beyond human-centric interests and altering how land and resources are managed.
Ep. 35: How the Endangered Species Act Saved the West and America
Q: What does recovery actually mean in the ESA—beyond counting individuals
Recovery involves protecting habitats, addressing ongoing threats, and ensuring that delisting is accompanied by long-term protections and careful monitoring to keep populations viable.
Ep. 35: How the Endangered Species Act Saved the West and America
Q: And I wonder how you think about the Endangered Species Act as it was created in that moment and as it exists today
The act began as a bipartisan, almost symbolic gesture of protecting life, but over time its implementation has become deeply political, balancing science with economic concerns and state management considerations.
Ep. 35: How the Endangered Species Act Saved the West and America
Q: So Dan, in this episode, you talk about the Endangered Species Act, and you give us the sort of deep background context behind the reason for the act
I explain how the ESA emerged from a broader environmental awakening, tying it to prior conservation laws and the moral extension to wildlife, and why it was seen as a necessary response to a long history of industrial impacts on native species.
