I love this show. I’d loved to have taken a class with Dan, or to be able to go hear Dan and Randall talking whilst I sit there quietly just soaking up their knowledge.

  • Finding excuses to go for walks…

I’ve loved Dan Flores since reading Coyote America.

But this podcast has made me a superfan. His insight and writing has me laughing, tearing up, and experiencing the West on a whole new level. I’m enjoying listening so much that I’m taking longer walks or making up errands to run so I can just listen uninterrupted. The Q&As at the end of each episode are a delight, as well. Keep ‘em coming, please!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 26: Where the Primeval West Abides
Q: So, Dan, in this script, you're tracking this float trip through essentially the North Slope Anwar. Can you talk about how your research and writing approach shapes the way you tell these landscape stories?
The guest explains that his journalistic and narrative background allows him to blend on-the-ground observation with historical analysis, giving readers an accessible window into complex environmental history while letting firsthand experiences anchor the broader arguments.
Ep. 24: Getting Over the Color Green and Learning to Love Badlands
Q: What prompted you to frame Badlands as a global geological phenomenon rather than a strictly Western feature?
The landscape's basic conditions—arid climate, exposed ancient rock layers, and the way erosion reveals long geological histories—are not unique to the American West; similar processes create Badlands around the world, which is why the discussion emphasizes a planetary perspective.
Ep. 22: New West, Modern West, Public Lands West
Q: Can you talk about your first moment where you sort of realized what the implications of these public lands had for your life?
The realization came when I began to recognize that the public lands of the West opened up a previously inaccessible world, allowing for exploration and connection with nature unlike anything available in my upbringing in Louisiana.
Ep. 21: How You Create a New West, and a New America
Q: What do you mean when you refer to the progressivism of the Roosevelt era?
The Roosevelt era's progressivism was a broader political movement aimed at corralling the forces of emerging big corporate capitalism through government intervention in various aspects of American life, especially in conservation.
Ep. 20: Coyote - America’s Jackal and Its Roller-Coaster Ride Through History
Q: What was the role of government agencies in the coyote extermination efforts?
Government agencies like the Bureau of Biological Survey intervened without scientific research to justify coyote eradication, eventually leading to the coyote's expansion.
