  • Soundtrack to my Sunrise

OPTR is fantastic! My house may be dark and empty but my day doesn't always have to start that way since I can now listen in on genuine conversations as soon as I wake up. I was a firefighter at the Humboldt Broncos bus crash and am now struggling with a DSM disorder. BUT listening to Mark and his guests gives me hope for myself and anyone else on a healing journey. There is a contagious positivity that results when veterans and first responders recover out loud and together!

Episode #362, How to FORGE a new path, Blacksmithing might be for you
Q: What is the long-term vision for Forging Ahead and its impact on mental health care?
To establish Canada's first preventative mental health center and arts/trades campus, incorporating art therapy validated by research, with partners across government and academia to create sustainable programs and national recognition.
Episode #362, How to FORGE a new path, Blacksmithing might be for you
Q: How did forging come into your life and become a path to healing?
A casual suggestion from a friend while recovering sparked the journey; he pursued formal training, fell in love with the craft, and realized it offered a profound sense of peace and purpose that led to starting a charity.
Episode #345 with Dr. Robb Kelly, Recovery Expert
Q: Do you believe that sex addiction exists?
Yes, it exists as a real addiction when it is compulsive and destructive, even though it isn't always listed in formal diagnostic manuals; the key is recognizing the pattern and its impact, then addressing underlying causes rather than just the behavior.
Episode #354 with Kayla Pollock, Quadriplegic Mom offered MAID
Q: Kayla, how did the MAID conversation start and what was your immediate reaction?
It began with the social worker presenting MAID as an option after I faced escalating care barriers; I initially considered it because I felt desperate due to pain and the inability to access basic supports, but the thought of leaving my son without me made me reconsider and pushed me to seek other options.
Episode #358 with Colonel Pat Stogran, Former Veterans Ombudsman and Former Commander of 3 PPCLI
Q: How did the role of Veterans Ombudsman come to be and what did it entail at the start?
Pat describes being appointed in a hurried press conference, initially seeing the role as limited and not fully empowered, with later realization that the office would struggle against systemic resistance and bureaucratic pushback.
