Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 76a - Grand Master Norman Sandler, Kenpo International,Florida USA (Part 1 of 2)
Q: Tell us about your black belt grading and what stood out to you.
The 1978 black belt test with Ed Parker and Grandmaster Velez was nerve-wracking but formative; Parker personally kicked me for emphasis, and the experience underscored the importance of timing, technique, and perseverance. It was a turning point that reinforced the value of cross-training and the depth of mentorship I received from Parker and Velez.
Episode 76a - Grand Master Norman Sandler, Kenpo International,Florida USA (Part 1 of 2)
Q: What inspired you to start practicing martial arts and how did you find your system?
I was captivated after watching Five Fingers of Death and Enter the Dragon, which spurred me to pursue training in Kenpo. I joined an Ed Parker School in Tucson because it offered a direct path to learning Parker-style Kenpo, and I quickly moved from student to instructor as part of a boot-camp style training program that emphasized rigorous discipline.
Episode 74c - 9th Deg Scott Hilderbrand, The Kenpo Mill, Reno, NV, USA (Part 3 of 3)
Q: OK. So what advice would you have for someone starting out in the martial arts?
Find a place you feel comfortable with, commit to it, and stick with it even when it gets hard. Focus on understanding what you're learning, keep it enjoyable, and don't rush the journey. Recording insights and staying curious about how you learn will compound over time.
Episode 74b - 9th Deg Scott Hilderbrand, The Kenpo Mill, Reno, NV, USA (Part 2 of 3)
Q: How do you balance teaching traditional Kenpo with cross-training in other arts?
By focusing on principles that complement one another and introducing new practices only after a solid foundation is established, ensuring cross-training strengthens rather than confuses the student.
Episode 69b - 8th Deg Assoc Master , Scott Gonzalez American Kenpo, Arizona, USA (Part 2 of 2)
Q: What advice would you give to someone starting out in the martial arts?
Any martial art is better than none; focus on proximity and consistency, research to find a fit, and value the community and people you train with.
