  • Important Podcast!

As an adult with Serious Mental Illness, NAMI has played an important part in my journey. I have been involved with NAMI for over six years through attending my local support group. I’m so impressed by all NAMI does nationally, statewide, and locally for those with mental illness. This podcast is an excellent addition to the organization’s work! I look forward to increasing my involvement with NAMI, so that I can join their efforts to improve the lives of those with mental illness.

Building a Welcoming, Loving World Featuring Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Taylor Locke, and Hannah Wesolowski
Q: What are the top barriers to accessing care for LGBTQ+ youth, and how can communities help?
Barriers include cost, transportation, fear of being outed, not feeling understood, and worries about negative consequences or compulsory reporting; communities can counter these by fostering trusted, accepting environments, ensuring affirming care, and supporting crisis services like 988-Press-3.
Building a Welcoming, Loving World Featuring Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, Taylor Locke, and Hannah Wesolowski
Q: What can you tell us about some of the trends or findings from this year's report that show us why our advocacy for LGBTQ plus young people is so important right now?
The data reveal an urgent mental health crisis among LGBTQ+ youth, with higher rates of suicidal ideation and attempts, particularly among transgender and non-binary youth, and higher risks for youth of color; discrimination and victimization are key drivers, not identity itself, and preventing these experiences through supportive environments can mitigate risk.
How Mental Health Care Has Evolved Featuring Dr. Christine Crawford and Dr. Ken Duckworth
Q: What are the most pressing topics in mental health care today?
The primary concerns are access to quality providers and resources, especially for youth, plus the need to understand and safely integrate new technologies like AI and digital tools.
Mental Health On and Off the Field Featuring Tenisha Patterson Brown
Q: Would you tell us more about your experience in sports management and what insights did that impart on you in terms of the mental health of athletes and their support systems?
Tenisha describes starting in recruiting, evolving into business leadership, and recognizing that athletes are whole people. She emphasizes supporting players beyond talent, building a platform like Off The Field, and ensuring families have resources and guidance to manage transitions and mental health.
What Data Shows About Building Supportive Workplace Cultures Featuring Brit Wanstrath
Q: What did we learn about what causes some employees to feel uncomfortable talking about their mental health at work, and do you have suggestions for increasing comfort?
She notes stigma as a major deterrent, with many worried about judgment; suggests leadership should model healthy behaviors, provide resources, and use open dialogue to reduce fear, plus practical steps like better communication of benefits.
