  • Wonderful Support

Listening to this series of podcasts has helped me better understand hoarding. I’ve tried to help my sister and her family make unusable spaces in their home more functional. But often found myself frustrated and angry with them. I practiced “speeches” I wanted to give them to make them face the realities of their hoarding. After listening to several episodes, I understand that my planned speeches would not only be pointless, but hurtful as well. Thanks for creating this podcast. I also enjoy th... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Hypnosis and Hoarding
Q: What is the difference between permissive and authoritarian hypnosis, and why does that matter?
Permissive hypnosis invites rather than commands, which tends to be more comfortable for most people and aligns with a sense of personal control; authoritarian hypnosis relies on being told what to do, which can be quicker for some but may feel less safe to others, influencing how readily someone enters a hypnotic state.
Hypnosis and Hoarding
Q: Could you explain in a nutshell how hypnosis works in the context of hoarding and behavior change?
Hypnosis is a self-directed state that becomes active when a person feels safe and believes the process will help; it's about guiding the mind toward relaxation and clearer thinking rather than forcing change, and the therapeutic effect comes from the person's willingness to engage with the process.
Hoarding Stuff special with Michael Preston Shoot
Q: Why are national guidelines for hoarding important, and how should they be used by practitioners?
Guidelines provide a framework that helps practitioners, managers, and providers align their actions with best practices, justify interventions, and coordinate across health, housing, and social care. They also anchor front-line decisions in established standards, reduce trial-and-error approaches, and support a consistent, informed response.
Hoarding Stuff special with Michael Preston Shoot
Q: What are the biggest issues that come up with safeguarding and hoarding that you think?
The issues arise from misinterpreting the Care Act criteria, especially around self-neglect, and from viewing hoarding too often as a lifestyle choice rather than understanding the backstory, capacity, and the broader system needs. The key is compassionate inquiry to understand why someone is living as they are and to mobilize multi-agency resources to support safer, more dignified outcomes.
Bron Afon Blether
Q: What would you say to other organizations then that were considering putting together a project?
Go ahead and do it. We'll share the information and what we found helpful.
