  • Buzzword bingo.

In 30 years in education I have never heard such a meaningless mish-mash of edu-babble that actually conveys nothing.

If I was going to write a satire based on an education consultant who actually was an empty facade I would be transcribing the highlights from this podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Series 18 Episode 210 Ross Featherston & Dr Ray Swann (Part 3): Sacred and Profane
Q: What role do rituals and symbols play in shaping school culture and student belonging?
Rituals like the triangle can become powerful symbols of unity and care, helping students feel valued and supported, which then enables tougher conversations and healthier risk-taking in the long run.
Series 18 Episode 210 Ross Featherston & Dr Ray Swann (Part 3): Sacred and Profane
Q: What does it mean for a boy to live a life that's worthwhile and well-lived within a school context?
The guests discuss authentic self-expression, connection, and motivation as core aspects of a worthwhile life, emphasizing environmental cues, role models, and a culture that values both success and character over material status.
Series 18 Episode 204 Dr Ellen Heyting (Part 3): Putting Research Into Practice
Q: What did you learn from your research, and how do you see belonging affecting schooling practices and policy?
She explains that belonging increases experiences and outcomes but is experienced differently across individuals; schools can implement deliberate systems—such as houseparent roles and structured social interactions—to foster belonging, which in turn supports retention and success for marginalized students.
Series 18 Episode 204 Dr Ellen Heyting (Part 3): Putting Research Into Practice
Q: Talk to us about your own research. What are the things that you find really curious and interesting such that you would put yourself through the exquisitely painful process of doing proper research and then writing it up?
Ellen describes her PhD work on belonging as a response to gaps in the literature about marginalized boarding students; she emphasizes belonging as a lever for completion and notes that meaningful research stems from real-world contexts, including experiences in schools like United World College in Singapore. She also highlights how her work aims to translate research into practice for schools and policy.
Series 18 Episode 204 Dr Ellen Heyting (Part 1): Social Purpose
Q: But can you give us the short version of what you're doing today and your journey that got you there?
Ellen explains her role at Melbourne Metrics within a social-purpose initiative that focuses on impact and partnerships with schools, including international work and big projects like the CIS partnership and Matching for Success.
