  • Great to hear global views on EPRR

I came across this podcast trying to find a good EPRR podcast. And this one is great, the variety of topics is really interesting and the speakers are genuinely passionate about the topic. Also helps to put some of the challenges we face in the UK in to a global context.

  • What about the Wildfires on the west coast??

Hi guys! I am a RN, and got interested in disaster medicine about 2 years ago when I started volunteering with the Red Cross. I was able to deploy to CA Wildfires, flood in Baton Rouge, and Hurricane Matthew last summer and gain some incredible experiences. I love listening to your podcast. Haven't missed an episode, however, I live on the West coast and we have been experiencing some devastating wildfires! I haven't heard one thing mentioned about it. I'm just curious...

  • Politics not Medicine

Unfortunately, the hosts decided to move away from a FOAMed forum and dive into politics. If you are looking for education I would look elsewhere.

Hot Weather Medical Emergencies with Dr. Joe Holley
Q: Yeah, Joe, as far as progression of the spectrum from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, what factors affect the speed of progression if not managed appropriately?
Factors include the person's physical conditioning, pre-existing medical conditions, medications that blunt heat response, ambient humidity, whether air is moving, and the intensity of physical activity; all these influence how quickly cooling becomes insufficient and a patient progresses toward heat stroke.
2026 Hurricane Season Forecast Review
Q: What drives the changes in forecast graphics, and how should people interpret the cone and inland warnings?
Dan explains that the updated forecast cone emphasizes uncertainty and includes inland warnings, showing that impacts extend far from the center track and that people should look at watches and warnings in addition to the cone to assess risk.
2026 Hurricane Season Forecast Review
Q: Yeah, could you give us a little insight as to what drives the ocean temperature and the Pacific wind patterns?
Dr. Joe explains that the El Niño/La Niña cycle is driven by trade winds along the equatorial Pacific; weaker winds during El Niño reduce upwelling, warming surface waters, which in turn increases wind shear in some regions and decreases it in others, ultimately influencing hurricane activity in the Atlantic.
Dan Zehner From NHERI on The Past Year’s Disaster Data
Q: How does NHERI use data and simulations to inform building codes and design practices?
NHERI combines large-scale physical testing, numerical simulations, and data from field reconnaissance to validate how structures perform under wind and surge, and then translates those findings into code updates and practical guidance for engineers and policymakers.
Dan Zehner From NHERI on The Past Year’s Disaster Data
Q: Dan, why do you think we've seen more rapid intensification in recent seasons?
The rapid intensification trend is strongly linked to warmer sea surface temperatures and broader climate change influences, which increase energy in the system and speed up how quickly storms strengthen, especially in the Gulf region.
