  • Chicken soup for the IO’s soul

As an IO psych guy (and a people analytics leader at my company), I have to say that I love this podcast. It’s interesting. It’s entertaining. Most importantly, it gives me perspective about how people analytics is being practiced in other organizations. Just what I need to make me think outside the box for my own company.

  • Entertaining and Informative

I found the first episode to be both funny and informative… a mixture of crazy data study experiences from their past, useful comments about mathematical techniques and real-world vs. academic differences. I appreciate that the hosts are willing to be wrong and discuss/debate topics anyway. Looking forward to listening to additional episodes and laughing along with the hosts about what really happens in the data world.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Power of Us & Social Identity at Work - Jay Van Bavel - #175
Q: How should organizations balance dissent with cohesion to maintain social cohesion and performance?
Dissent should be harnessed constructively; norms should encourage the first dissenter and protect constructive contribution, while leaders ensure that dissent serves the group's goals rather than personal agendas, thereby maintaining trust and cooperation.
The Power of Us & Social Identity at Work - Jay Van Bavel - #175
Q: What role does identity play in inclusion within organizations, especially when trying to fit into a new culture?
Identity acts like a set of lenses; when trying to fit in, people adopt practices and norms of the group, and inclusion comes from broad, superordinate identities and safe environments where people can be themselves while still contributing to shared goals.
The Power of Us & Social Identity at Work - Jay Van Bavel - #175
Q: But can you tell us a little bit about the book, The Power of Us, and what is the role that identity plays in this moment that we're in?
Identity plays a central role by shaping which groups we belong to, which norms we adopt, and how we interpret events; the most important takeaway is to reflect on which identities matter to you and which groups you join, because those choices influence behavior and belonging in everyday life and work.
What We Know About Astronauts, Artemis 2, & NASA - Suzanne Bell - #172
Q: How do you balance training and selection in a context where you must be very selective but also increasingly open to commercializing space?
She explains the need for multimodal, multimethod assessment and the use of prior data to guide selection, while recognizing time constraints and the necessity of training that aligns with selection priorities.
What We Know About Astronauts, Artemis 2, & NASA - Suzanne Bell - #172
Q: What do you know about human beings under stress that perhaps no one else knows from your research?
Bell points to the large, integrated database and ongoing publications that reveal how humans adapt to extreme confinement, and how positive affect and cognitive performance relate to mission success, with ongoing updates as Artemis data comes in.
