  • Very informative for diabetes newbies!

I am recently diagnosed and I have learned so much from this podcast. It covers different aspects of management and honestly, I appreciate that there is repetition over the seasons because hearing things restated slightly different really helps in driving points home. I feel more confident about management now.

  • Great Resource

I am newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and get a little overwhelmed by all the information coming at me. This podcast has become an excellent resource. Concepts are explained clearly, jargon is well defined, and the overall tone is upbeat. (Diabetes and/or high numbers are information, not an accusation or punishment!) I will continue to listen as I continue to learn about how to manage this disease.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Women, Weight, and Heart Health
Q: Heart disease is the number one killer of women in North America. What should women know about heart health and what can be done to prevent future issues?
The guest explains that there are sex-specific risk factors like pregnancy-related hypertension and early menopause, along with traditional risks, and emphasizes monitoring key health numbers, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and engaging in regular exercise; she also highlights the importance of awareness, early detection, and protective measures such as managing risk factors and considering cardiac rehab after events.
Obesity, Heart Disease + Brain Health
Q: Are there shared risk factors for both cardiovascular disease and cancer?
Yes, age is a major factor, and behavioral factors such as smoking and diet play large roles in elevating risk for both conditions. Diets with more processed foods increase risk, while plant-based diets with fiber and omega-3 fatty acids appear protective for both heart and cancer risks.
Obesity, Heart Disease + Brain Health
Q: So I'd like to start out by having you explain the connection between heart health and cancer.
There are shared risk factors and lifestyle influences; aging emphasizes risk, and factors like suboptimal diet and physical inactivity raise the chances of both diseases. Additionally, treatments for cancer can impact heart health, and survivors may face higher cardiovascular risk due to medications and long-term effects.
Making Healthy Changes with Diabetes
Q: What's a practical starting point for someone wanting to begin lifestyle changes for diabetes?
Begin with a provider to set realistic, incremental goals, use small, sustainable steps, and ensure you have support systems such as peer groups or coaches to stay accountable and motivated throughout the journey.
Making Healthy Changes with Diabetes
Q: What role does medication play alongside lifestyle changes for type 2 diabetes?
Medications provide essential benefit and can be more effective when paired with healthy lifestyle changes; in some cases, patients may be able to reduce or even come off certain medications over time if lifestyle changes are sustained, though this depends on individual factors like disease duration and comorbid conditions.
