Q: What are the key decision points in planning for a percutaneous approach?
Stone size is the main indicator for choosing PCNL, as well as the patient's anatomy and preference.
Core Curriculum: Surgical Management of Urolithiasis
Q: Can you walk us through your initial approach when a patient presents with suspected ureteral colic?
The first step is to obtain the patient's history, do a physical exam, perform basic labs, and get imaging, typically a CT scan, to evaluate for obstruction or evidence of infection.
AUA Guidelines: Recurrent Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections in Women
Q: Dr. Kaufman, when approaching these patients, how do you structure your evaluation and specifically, what is the role of the pelvic exam, urine culture, and symptom documentation?
The evaluation should start with a history focused on urinary symptoms, understanding prior surgical interventions and patient triggers. A pelvic exam and urine culture should be incorporated, but the focus is on a clinical approach rather than solely on lab results.
AUA2025: Key Takeaways: Endourology/Stones Highlights
Q: How do you envision the use of genetic testing in stone disease now and in the future?
