Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

World Humanitarian Day: Building Sustainable Care Through Service, Training and Global Partnership
Q: What advice would you give younger people who want to get involved in global surgery and humanitarian efforts?
Pursue a genuine desire to serve, cultivate humility, and seize opportunities as they arise; start locally if needed, involve residents and students, and gradually participate in international efforts with a goal of sustainable, respectful care rather than quick, temporary interventions.
World Humanitarian Day: Building Sustainable Care Through Service, Training and Global Partnership
Q: Tell us about one of your goals in humanitarian work and how mentorship and training factor into it.
A central goal is to teach local surgeons to build capacity, so care can be sustained locally rather than relying on short visits; mentorship creates lasting impact by enabling host countries to run training centers and improve outcomes over the long term.
World Humanitarian Day: Building Sustainable Care Through Service, Training and Global Partnership
Q: Is that true, and why is this humanitarian recognition so meaningful to you?
It is deeply meaningful because humanitarian work sits at the core of my being, representing a lifelong commitment to serve others beyond recognition and leadership roles, and it has been validated by notable acknowledgments that reinforce the importance of sustained service.
Igniting Discovery: Inside the AUA Innovation Nexus Bootcamp
Q: What advice would you give to the next cohort to maximize two days of engagement?
Be prepared, be open to feedback, map out who to connect with, and follow up with a clear plan and milestones; avoid overloading the room with technical details and instead demonstrate how the startup will reach milestones and deliver value.
Igniting Discovery: Inside the AUA Innovation Nexus Bootcamp
Q: What should founders focus on during the two-day bootcamp?
Founders should prioritize identifying their most critical needs (presentation, reimbursement, regulatory) and build relationships with the people who can solve them, while also telling their vision and business narrative to attract interest beyond just the technology.
