Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

BONUS: The Georgia Trust
Q: What happens when something gets preserved or added to the National Register in terms of protections?
Listing on the National Register does not provide direct protections; privately owned properties can still be bulldozed, so preservation often relies on contextualization and community engagement rather than legal barriers alone.
BONUS: The Georgia Trust
Q: Is there a certain number of years something has to be in existence to qualify as historic?
The rule of thumb is 50 years; this window allows historians and communities to assess significance beyond immediate attention and consider long-term value and potential removal from immediacy.
BONUS: The Georgia Trust
Q: Tell us a bit about The Trust. What's the nature of the work and especially your role in it?
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is a statewide nonprofit focused on historic preservation; they work on unique projects across the state and establish criteria for what counts as historic, guiding which places deserve preservation.
