For decades, the Georgia Guidestones were nothing more than kitschy roadside Americana…a curiosity people visited for fun, intrigue…and the occasional pagan ritual. Nicknamed “America’s Stonehenge,” the Guidestones' arrival was just as mysterious. As the legend goes, they were commissioned by a secretive funder named R.C. Christian, who wanted the stones inscribed with ten “commandments” for survi... more

  • Outstanding

I saw mention of this pod on Reddit and gave it a listen. Impressive blend of journalism and narrative. I gained an entirely different understanding of the guidestones, their creator and the story of their end. Well done team AJC.

  • Guide To The Guidestones

Well-researched investigation into the entire history of the Guidestones before and after their sad destruction. Although the identity of RC Christian has never officially been confirmed, we mostly know who he was, and it is good to get his name out in the light. Hopefully someone from his family will finally come forward to admit his involvement, and we can move on to deciding what to do with their remains.

  • Great work!

I enjoyed this! I was an Airborne Combat Engineer, and I enjoyed hearing about the explosion. I lived about three miles from the Guidestones from 1997 until 2016 - only went there a time or two. I worked in the granite industry back in the 80’s, when I was in college - many of my family members either quarried, cut or polished granite monuments. I know many of the people interviewed. I sure wish this case could be prosecuted and get a conviction.

  • FINALLY! A REAL PODCAST!

Love to hear that sweet, sweet Tascam field audio 🌾 & local vernacular. Well told stories from little weird towns full of colorful embellishments are THE HEART of podcasting. We’re recording humanity’s oral history: the ancient tradition of storytelling & spinning creation myths to try to understand this wonderful life we share! Looking forward to the next episode makes me feel alive🤣 Thanks!

BONUS: The Georgia Trust
Q: What happens when something gets preserved or added to the National Register in terms of protections?
Listing on the National Register does not provide direct protections; privately owned properties can still be bulldozed, so preservation often relies on contextualization and community engagement rather than legal barriers alone.
BONUS: The Georgia Trust
Q: Is there a certain number of years something has to be in existence to qualify as historic?
The rule of thumb is 50 years; this window allows historians and communities to assess significance beyond immediate attention and consider long-term value and potential removal from immediacy.
BONUS: The Georgia Trust
Q: Tell us a bit about The Trust. What's the nature of the work and especially your role in it?
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is a statewide nonprofit focused on historic preservation; they work on unique projects across the state and establish criteria for what counts as historic, guiding which places deserve preservation.
