Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

093: Vineyard Nutrition Essentials - Phosphorus Fundamentals with Dr. Terry Bates
Q: What do growers do if they find phosphorus deficiency in their plant tissue test?
Start with checking soil pH and availability, then consider timing and method of phosphorus delivery, prioritizing soil-applied options that place phosphorus near active root zones, and reserve foliar methods as a last resort during urgent need or dry conditions.
093: Vineyard Nutrition Essentials - Phosphorus Fundamentals with Dr. Terry Bates
Q: And so I'm just wondering what advice do you have for growers in reading their soil reports with regard to phosphorus content?
Treat soil phosphorus as a balance of supply and uptake; consider not only the total amount but how pH, aluminum, iron, and calcium availability will affect how much phosphorus is actually available to plants, and use that to guide fertilizer decisions rather than blindly increasing application.
092: Vineyard Nutrition Essentials - Nitrogen Fundamentals with Dr. Markus Keller
Q: When and what are we really wanting to test based on the latest research?
Leaf blade sampling tends to be more precise for nitrogen, with bloom or veraison as the standard timing, though sampling at bloom preserves the opportunity to influence the season; petioles can offer additional insights especially for boron, but leaf blades are generally preferred for nitrogen.
091: Rare Grape Varieties & Their Wines with Jolie-Laide Wines
Q: Scott, I'll start with you. I believe Jolie-Laide was started in 2010. What's your background? What led you to start the winery?
Scott shared his journey from working in restaurants to getting involved in winemaking in California, where he was inspired by smaller wineries and the lesser-known grape varieties they were producing.
088: Pruning Q&A with Fritz Westover
Q: What should my pruning strategy look like after several nights of negative 20 Fahrenheit temperatures?
Check bud viability and consider renewing from below ground if most buds are damaged; for surviving buds, consider a mixed approach to assure fruitful growth.
