Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

DAIRY SPECIAL: The udder reality of new season milk prices
Q: Can you tell me a bit more about that range?
Eliza explains the range difference between southern export-focused and domestic-focused companies, with domestic offers tending to be higher to secure supply, while export-focused players are more conservative.
What are Australian farmers planting this season?
Q: But just quickly, what could this conflict mean for demand for our key grain commodities in the Middle East and beyond?
If the conflict persists, displaced Middle Eastern demand could shift to Southeast Asia, which would pressure prices slightly due to the greater supply available to buyers in that region. However, China's ability to absorb extra volumes and favorable freight dynamics may offset some of these effects, supporting steadier demand for certain grains while others, like sheep meat reliant on Middle Eastern markets, face different pressures depending on regional restocking and supply conditions.
What are Australian farmers planting this season?
Q: Before we get into our actual estimates, the surging cost of fuel and fertiliser owing to the conflict in the Middle East is a big focus point for obvious reasons. How big of an impact is this expected to have on producer margins? And do you think we will see reduced acreage planted as a result of this?
The impact on margins is significant because fuel and fertiliser costs are major components of operating expenses; estimates suggest that a 40% rise in both could translate to roughly a 6-8% increase in total operating costs from fuel and about a 12% increase from fertiliser, potentially compressing margins enough to alter planting decisions, especially if grain prices do not move in tandem. Farmers are also likely to re-evaluate break-even costs and may adjust acreages depending on how long input pressures persist and how weather and grain prices evolve.
Planning for change in a volatile world
Q: How should exporters prepare for non-tariff measures and sustainability demands from big buyers?
Exporters should conduct carbon audits, understand their current emissions, and use available calculators and incentives like carbon credits to document sustainability; meeting EU standards and other corporate sustainability targets will be essential for market access.
Planning for change in a volatile world
Q: What are some of the key challenges and opportunities by commodity, and how should producers approach adaptation?
Cropping faces yield declines if rainfall becomes less reliable, dairy is affected by heat stress, and livestock are impacted by feed shortages; however, opportunities lie in improving emissions intensity, adopting carbon and sustainability tools, and leveraging market access advantages as standards tighten.
