  • Progressive Political Ponderings

This podcast is almost all about progressive politics and almost nothing about money. The Money Puzzle podcast is a significantly better podcast about money with a more informative host, intelligent guests and nothing about politics.

  • Socialism and Communism

You keep pedalling negativity and pessimism instead of promoting progress. Alan, have a look at what history teaches us about communism and socialism- every country who has tried is a failed state. We have regressed in the world stage in every aspect with the labor government promoting ideas that you ascribe to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mining for More
Q: Is SpaceX's IPO a giant scam?
The hosts explain that while SpaceX's inclusion in indices could create exit liquidity risks for some investors, the broader debate hinges on insider control, profitability rules for index inclusion, and diversification benefits, making it not a simple yes or no but a nuanced investment consideration.
When The House Stops Winning
Q: Matt from Tama Rama Music asks about Australia Post price increases and whether the government should subsidize letters.
They acknowledge rising postal costs as a real burden for businesses but argue that Australia Post faces rising costs and declining letter volumes; subsidies could help, yet the economic rationale and budget impact require careful consideration before policy moves.
Refined Chaos
Q: What practical steps could Australia take to prepare for potential stagflation and higher rates?
The hosts note that aggressive behavioral changes have not yet occurred; they expect a period of stagflation with higher inflation and uncertain growth, implying plans should focus on productivity, energy security, and prudent fiscal and monetary policy while avoiding overreaction.
Refined Chaos
Q: Why do you think the housing market has become so unaffordable for the younger generation, and should we reform CGT grandfathering to address inequality?
They argue that housing affordability has deteriorated because prices have outpaced income growth for decades; grandfathering could alleviate or worsen inequality depending on design, and suggests gradual, thoughtful reform with attention to long-term impact.
Refined Chaos
Q: What are your thoughts on the economics of the NDIS and whether cutting it could hurt the economy by reducing workforce participation?
They acknowledge the NDIS supports disabled people and employment, but emphasize it needs to be more efficient and well-designed; spending should aim for maximum bang for the buck while balancing budgetary constraints and inflationary pressures.
