  • Peaks and troughs

Aside from Alan, the show would benefit from more analysis and less waffle - it was 3:20 of the episode ‘Who will benefit from the budget’ before any mention of policy…

  • Terrific stuff

Never written a review, never listened to a podcast, wary of all podcasts as they’re essentially advertising platforms with no end leading to dilution. This is far from the case - genuine experts with a genuine need for continuous communication and more value for taxpayers. Love it.

  • Completely mixed bag

I subscribed to this for the deep dives by Alan Kohler but picked up the rest of this on the same feed.

Alan is a master communicator which is rare for business presenters.

Most are wooden, or try to insert too much information, or oversensationalise.

The rest of the business and finance team at the ABC are well intended but barely listenable and would do well to study why Alan rates so well. It’s media school 101.

  • Perfect

Carrington Clarke’s sonorous voice and sultry undertones give me the strength to keep goin, and I would happily submit to sacrifice by fire in honor of his longevity. ABC Business Daily is the only reason I’ve started wearing a seatbelt to work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Do skilled migrants help the economy?
Q: Why are international graduates doing worse in the labour market than those who enter via skilled visas?
There isn't a single answer; the research highlights that the pathways from education to permanent migration are complex, with many cohorts following different routes. The data show that simply studying in Australia does not guarantee better labour-market outcomes, and outcomes depend on the visa pathway and occupation.
Do skilled migrants help the economy?
Q: Give me an idea of what sparked this particular piece of research.
The research was sparked by the availability of large datasets that let researchers track migrant outcomes, including where they work and how much they earn, enabling a detailed look at how different visa pathways affect labour-market results.
Should AI answer the phone?
Q: How do you view the impact on call-center jobs and the longer-term employment landscape?
The guest argues that AI replaces easier, repetitive tasks first while letting humans move into more complex roles, creating new opportunities rather than causing universal unemployment; the emphasis is on augmenting human capabilities.
Should AI answer the phone?
Q: What is the core value proposition beyond simply answering calls?
The platform optimizes every piece of the interaction to convert calls into measurable outcomes, like more appointments and faster responses, by integrating with existing tools and APIs and enabling multi-language support.
Should AI answer the phone?
Q: Briefly outline the types of businesses that are looking to use Phonely and give examples of how it's applied.
Phonely is finding traction in insurance, healthcare, and home services, especially for lead capture and post-call qualification, where automating initial interactions can book appointments and route customers efficiently.
